Ginnie’s expression darkened, but with so many eyes watching-and considering Cameron’s identity-she could only force a nod. “All right.”
Cameron let out a breath of relief and offered his hand with polite formality. Ginnie gave a strained smile, took his arm, and the two headed toward the dance floor.
Watching them walk away, Jill raised an eyebrow triumphantly, then turned to Lucas. “You better not dance with anyone else. If Sloane finds out, she won’t be happy.”
Lucas’s gaze flickered. He murmured under his breath, “Would she?”
“Huh?” Jill was too focused on the dance floor to catch what he said.
“Nothing.” Lucas returned to his usual indifference. “Aren’t you graduating soon? What are you doing wasting time at a company banquet?”
Jill scrunched her nose playfully. “I’m here to keep watch for Sloane. Gotta make sure none of these banquet fairies devour you.”
She mimed a monster chomping someone’s head, her tone mischievous and full of sass.
Lucas’s grip on his glass unconsciously tightened. The wine trembled in the crystal cup.
In the past three years, Jill was the only one who dared to bring up Sloane in front of him.
That very morning, his grandmother had subtly mentioned the need for the Hawthorne family to have a matriarch.
Lucas had poured all his focus into building Hawthorne Corp, and the company was thriving more than
ever.
But he was twenty-eight now, and the position of his wife remained empty-an empty seat many were eyeing.
After the dance, Ginnie and Cameron returned from the floor, only to find Lucas gone.
Ginnie frowned, unwilling to accept it. “Lucas, I don’t believe I can’t win you over.”
Lucas didn’t reappear until the end of the event, stepping up only to say a few words.
Throughout the entire banquet, Jill had guarded him like a personal shield. But just before the end, someone came looking for her. Seeing Lucas on stage, she left for a moment to deal with it.
The moment fill was out of sight, Cinnie smiled smugly. She pressed her lips together with determination in her eyes.
Outside the hotel, the night air was cool Traffic buzzed on the streets, neon lights flickering over the
pavement.
An assistant helped the slightly tipsy Ginnie out the front doors. Her steps were unsteady, checks flushed, but her eyes remained sharp and clear.

Ginnie waved her off and spoke with feigned haziness. “I’m fine. Go back inside and grab my purse; I think I left it in the banquet hall.”
