Sloane looked into Larry’s earnest eyes, a flicker of warmth stirring in her chest. She pressed her lips together and said softly, “There’s no need to repay me with your life. I didn’t save you to get something in
return.”
Larry, thinking she was about to reject him again, tensed up, a flash of disappointment crossing his eyes. But then he heard her continue.
“But I can consider being friends.”
His face lit up instantly with joy. “Really? That’s great!”
He was so excited he started stumbling over his words. “I-I’ll definitely be the best friend I can be.”
Sloane hadn’t expected this silly side of him and couldn’t help but let out a quiet laugh.
Seeing her finally smile, Larry grinned even wider.
From a distance, Lucas watched the two laughing together. His chest tightened with jealousy, and he unconsciously snapped the dry twig in his hand with a sharp crack.
Standing beside him, Ginnie took in his reaction with quiet satisfaction. A faint smile tugged at her lips. “What are Sloane and Larry talking about? They look pretty happy, don’t they?”
Lucas’s expression darkened. His grip tightened, crushing the twig into pieces.
He turned and glared at Ginnie coldly, his voice sharp, “Ginnie, you’d better stop playing games. Next time, I won’t hold back just because of your grandfather.”
Her face twisted with anger and disbelief. “Why?” she snapped. “I could help you more than she ever could. I love you more than she does. Why can’t you see that?”
Lucas stared at her with frosty detachment. “I love Sloane not because of what she can give me, but because she’s her. And you-three years ago I made myself very clear. If you insist on deluding yourself, don’t blame me for being cruel.”
His words hit Ginnie like a slap. Her face went pale, and she bit her lip, eyes burning with resentment. “You think Sloane really cares about you? If she did, she wouldn’t have agreed to break off the engagement
back then.”
Lucas’s heart clenched at her words, like something inside him had been yanked hard.
But even then, he stayed calm-at least on the surface. “That’s between her and me. None of your business”
Ginnie was furious now, shaking with rage. “You’ll regret this, Lucas.”
She vowed he’d beg her to marry him one day.
Meanwhile, Jill returned cheerfully with a pile of prizes, only for Samson to tell her that Lucas and Ginnie had left for an urgent matter.
