“Please… help me…” Melody begged weakly, cold sweat dripping from her forehead.

Sloane immediately put on medical gloves and gently touched the edge of the wound. “Does it sting?”

“No… I can’t feel anything…” Melody shook her head. “But the wound keeps getting bigger…”

Sloane took out a silver needle and lightly pierced several acupoints around the injury, watching closely for any reaction. When she saw the tip of the needle begin to turn faintly blue, her pupils contracted sharply.

“This isn’t a normal wound.” She turned to Conor and lowered her voice. “It’s a biochemical toxin. Genetically modified.”

Conor’s face turned grim. He immediately motioned for the soldiers to carry Melody out to rest. Once the door shut, he locked it behind them and turned back to Sloane. “Are you sure?”

“The needle test shows traces of organothiophosphates-this is a hallmark of military-grade neurotoxins.” Sloane pulled a small porcelain vial from her medicine pouch. “Have her take this. It’ll slow the spread of the toxin for now.”

Conor took the vial and pressed his communicator to give a series of quick instructions, then leaned on the table with both hands. “There have already been seventeen similar cases reported near the border. We suspect-”

“That it was a deliberate release.” Sloane finished the sentence, her gaze razor-sharp. “This kind of toxin doesn’t occur in nature. Commander, I need immediate access to all case files. And-” she paused, “I need to visit the site where it happened.”

Conor looked up sharply. “It’s too dangerous!”

“But it’s the fastest way to find a cure.” Sloane was already scribbling in her notebook. “Also, get these herbs to the border as fast as possible.”

“Understood.” Conor took the list and gave out orders at once. He then pressed the button on his desk communicator. “Prep the helicopter and fly Ms. Sloane to Dongxin immediately.”

Sloane arrived in Dongxin shortly after. The base had already received Conor’s orders and escorted her straight to the infirmary.

Inside lay over a dozen patients just like Melody.

Sloane examined each one methodically, analyzing their symptoms with growing urgency.

“I need a lab, she said firmly.

“Of course” The commanding officer immediately summoned his team.

A young officer stepped in and gave her a crisp salute. “Please follow me.”

They passed through three layers of secure access before arriving at a lab Sloane knew well. It was fully equipped, with every file she could possibly need neatly laid out on the worktable.
