Chapter 296 A Morning Almost Said

What haunted Sloane the most was Ginnie’s claim that “Lucas once proposed to her.”

Sloane had always been decisive by nature, and she hated this hesitant, uncertain version of herself.

Her thoughts were pulled back by the faint smell of burning and the sound of lowered voices.

“Molly, how do I tell if the food’s done cooking?”

“Let me see… it’s ready. Just add a pinch of salt and stir it in.”

“A pinch of salt? So how much is that supposed to be?”

“Salt… wait, which one is the salt?”

Lucas fumbled through the spice rack, sweat sticking his bangs to his forehead.

“My greens are burning…”

He gave up looking for the salt and tried to save the now-charred vegetables, one hand holding the phone, the other struggling with the spatula.

Sloane couldn’t hold back a snort of laughter.

Lucas spun around, startled, and dropped his phone on the counter with a loud clatter. Molly’s voice continued shouting from the speaker, “President?”

He instinctively shifted his body to block the scorched pan from view, the tips of his ears turning visibly red.

“You’re awake?” he asked, trying to sound calm, though the panic in his voice betrayed him.

Sloane walked barefoot toward him, peeking over his shoulder at the disaster in the pan. “Mr. Lucas, are you testing a new recipe?”

Lucas cleared his throat. “First time cooking. Just… misjudged the heat.”

Sloane chuckled and shook her head, taking the spatula from his hand. She shut off the heat, dumped the burned greens, and reheated the pan with a little oil. Sunlight streamed in through the window, highlighting her profile, her long lashes casting soft shadows beneath her eyes.

“So you’re not perfect at everything after all.” She teased as she stirred. “And here I thought you were invincible.

Lucas stood beside her, eyes filled with warmth. “I can learn.”

His words made her hands pause for a split second. She lowered her gaze, focusing on the pan to mask her suddenly racing heartbeat. “The salt’s in the third jar on your left.”

As Lucas handed it to her, his fingers brushed hers. Both froze for a moment.

Sloane turned quickly to grab the chopped scallions but bumped right into him.

“Careful,” Lucas murmured, steadying her by the shoulders. His shirt collar was slightly open, revealing the faint line of his collarbone.

The scent of seafood soup filled the air, and sunlight cast their shadows onto the floor-intertwined.

Sloane instinctively looked up-and locked eyes with him.

Lucas’s breath hitched slightly, his hands tightening just a little on her shoulders.
