Chapter 307 Stop Acting Tough, Larry

Chapter 307 Stop Acting Tough, Larry

Sloane frowned, a touch of displeasure flickering across her face; she hated feeling so hesitant and unsure of herself.

“What’s wrong?” Lucas noticed the faint crease between her brows and immediately leaned closer, concern plain in his voice. “Is your wound hurting again?”

She found him so close she could feel the warmth of his breath brushing her cheek. His dark eyes brimmed with unguarded worry, so intense it made her heart skip a beat. Will you protect Ginnie? The question nearly spilled from her lips.

“I…” She opened her mouth, but when she caught sight of the shadow his lashes cast against his cheek, her words stalled in her throat.

Lucas picked up on her hesitation instantly. He blinked, his voice uncommonly gentle, coaxing, “What is it you want to say?”

Sloane tightened her grip around the glass in her hands, her fingertips blanching. She lowered her gaze, her long lashes dropping shadows across her face. “It’s nothing… I’m just tired.”

He searched her averted eyes; a faint trace of disappointment flickered there before he quickly smoothed it away, curving his lips into a small smile. Tugging the blanket higher over her, he murmured, “Then rest; I’ll stay with you.”

Sloane turned onto her side with her back to him and let out a quiet sigh.

When Lucas entered the other room, Larry was stubbornly trying to hold a fork with his injured hand.

The nurse at his side looked anxious. “Mr. Larry, your hand hasn’t healed yet; you can’t do this

Lucas strode forward, snatched the fork from his hand, and snapped, “Your hand’s nearly ruined and you’re still trying to act tough?”

Larry arched a brow at him. “Since when does Mr. Hawthorne like meddling so much?”

Lucas ignored the jab, picked up a bowl, and scooped up a spoonful of porridge, holding it to his lips. “Eat.”

Larry turned his head away. “I don’t need you-”

“You’re starving and still putting on airs?” Lucas cut him off, irritation creeping into his tone.

Larry glanced at the spoon stubbornly hovering in front of him, then finally opened his mouth and took a bite. “Tastes awful.”

“Then don’t cat.” Lucas’ words were sharp, but his hand was steady as he lifted another spoonful. “If it weren’t for the fact that you…” He paused, his voice dropping lower, “shielded her, I wouldn’t bother with you.”

Larry’s chewing slowed; the air between them shifted into something unspoken, strangely charged.

“How’s Sloane?” Larry asked suddenly.

Lucas’ hand tightened almost imperceptibly around the spoon. “Just fell asleep.”

Larry nodded and let the subject drop. For a moment, the only sound in the room was the faint clink of the spoon against the bowl.
