Sloane’s eyes widened in shock. “She’s been…”

“Lying low.” Lucas slipped his phone back into his pocket. “Unlike her flamboyant sister, Ms. Cora knows how to bide her time.” He cast Sloane a meaningful glance. “At this morning’s board meeting, she convinced all the shareholders with just a ten-minute speech.”
“She’s clever…” Sloane’s words trailed off as her gaze locked on Lucas’ dark eyes; realization struck her. “It was you?”
Lucas’ voice was gentle, yet carried an undeniable weight. “I simply offered Chairman Lyle a more suitable option.” He lowered his head, carefully peeling the orange in his hand. “After all, a successor facing criminal charges doesn’t do much for a company’s stock price.”
“So you gave her a push.” Sloane’s tone was thoughtful.
“I only handed her the key.” Lucas placed a neatly peeled segment at Sloane’s lips. “The door was opened by Cora’s years of planning.”
Sloane accepted it without thinking; the tangy sweetness burst across her tongue.
“She’s waited so long for this,” she murmured softly. “Looks like Ginnie won’t be getting back up this time.”
Lucas’ eyes grew darker. “The most terrifying revenge isn’t a sudden strike; it’s the patience to lie in wait.” His voice shifted suddenly. “Just like…”
“Just like what?” Sloane prompted naturally.
Lucas held her gaze, then unexpectedly reached up and brushed a trace of juice from the corner of her mouth with his thumb.
The sudden intimacy stole her breath; heat flared across her cheeks.
Seeing the panic in her eyes, Lucas’ expression deepened, the corner of his mouth curving into a pleased smile.
To him, she looked like a startled fawn, so adorably flustered it made his heart tremble. If she’s this unsettled… maybe it means she isn’t as clueless as she pretends.
To test his suspicion, Lucas leaned closer-close enough to count the tremor of her lashes.

His voice dropped, low and magnetic “Sloane, don’t you have something you want to ask me?”
Instinctively, Aloane edged back, nearly knocking into the wall-until Lucas caught himself with a hand braced behind her.
He could feel the rush of her uneven breath; amusement glimmered in his eyes. “Your heart’s racing: What are you nervous about?”
“I’m not..” She denied it instantly, though the flush creeping up her ears betrayed her.
Lucas suddenly caught her hand and pressed it to his chest. “But mine is.”
Beneath her palm, his heartbeat pounded through the thin fabric, steady yet just as erratic as hers.
