Xandra Zane immediately stepped in front of Samantha like a bodyguard. “Sloane, don’t go too far. If you’ve got a problem, take it out on me. Stop bullying Samantha all the time.”
The others jumped in too, all accusing Sloane of picking on her.
While they were yelling, Samantha started crying, pretending to stop them and even saying a few fake nice things in Sloane’s defense–just enough to get them riled up even more.
Sloane stood there, face unreadable. She sometimes had to hand it to Samantha- the girl really had a gift for getting everyone to fight her battles while staying tucked away in the background playing the role of the sweet little angel.

Sloane let out a short laugh. “Oh really? Have you ever stood up for any of them? Ever taken heat for someone else?”
Their expressions soured even more. The girl who had first stood in front of Samantha quietly stepped aside. “I’ve got stuff to do. I’m heading out.”
The rest followed her lead, each finding an excuse to slip away. In no time, Samantha was left standing there all by herself.
She froze for a moment, then suddenly covered her face and ran off crying.
