Sloane felt the tremor in his fingertips and said evenly, “At the time, your condition was certain death. My body, after years of being steeped in herbs and poisons, was the only vessel that could withstand the toxins.” She spoke with calm detachment, as though it had nothing to do with her at all.
Before she could finish, Lucas suddenly dropped to one knee, pulling her-blanket and all-into his arms. He buried his face in the curve of her shoulder, his breath hot and heavy. “But it still left you weakened like this in the end.”
Sloane disliked the weight of such somber words. She cupped his face and tilted it upward, one brow arched. “So, you like me because I saved you?”
“Of course not!” Lucas shook his head vehemently, his voice urgent. “I’d already fallen for you long before you ever bore my poison.”
A sly glint flickered in Sloane’s eyes. “But we only met because I drew out your poison. How can you be sure what you feel isn’t just gratitude?”
Lucas shot to his feet, bracing his hands on either side of the sofa and caging her completely in his shadow. His eyes burned red with intensity. “Sloane, listen to me—”
“The first time I saw you, you were straddling me, threatening me with a weapon,” he said, his voice low and rushed. “All I could think was, how could this little thing be so defiant?”
Sloane’s lashes trembled, though the corners of her mouth curved upward.
“You love shrimp but hate peeling the shells; when you’re lost in thought, you always need something in your hand…” Lucas’ fingers traced lightly along her brows and eyes. “Are details like that born of gratitude too?”
His voice sank lower and lower until it was almost a sigh. “Sloane, what I love are all your imperfect moments; the stubbornness woven into your very bones; I love-”
He stopped short, catching the spark of mischief in her gaze. Lucas narrowed his eyes. “You did that on purpose?”
Sloane couldn’t hold back her laughter; her eyes curved like crescent moons. “I heard you. You like me- so, so much.”
Lucas’ eyes darkened. He leaned down abruptly, catching her lower lip between his teeth. The pressure wasn’t too harsh, but it was enough to draw a soft gasp from her.
The kiss carried a note of punishment; yet the instant his lips met hers, tenderness betrayed him.
“Little liar,” he murmured against her mouth, threading his fingers into her hair. “Let’s see how I punish you.”
Sloane laughed softly, tilting her head back to receive his kiss, her fingers sneaking up to the nape of his neck. Outside, the last drop of rain fell from the caves, scattering into a spray of light beneath the moon.
Meanwhile, Bonnie had escaped from the police car; the four officers inside had all been drugged
unconscious.
