As the group left the restaurant, Samson tugged Benjamin to the back and muttered under his breath, “So that’s why Lucas suddenly invited us to dinner-just to show off his romance.”
Sloane’s ears picked it up. She tilted her head toward Lucas. Hadn’t he said Samson was the one hosting?
Lucas acted as if he hadn’t heard a word, his face unreadable as he bent closer and asked, “Want to see the night view?”
His breath brushed against her ear, making her heart skip. Before she could reply, Lucas had already turned, tossing his car keys to Samson. “Give me the keys to your sports car. You take mine.”
Samson caught them, ready to complain, but Benjamin hooked him by the collar and dragged him away. His wails echoed faintly in the night air. “Lucas, you put women before brothers-!”
Sensing the situation, Jill quickly hurried after them, but not before flashing Sloane a playful wink. “Have fun, Sloane-”
Once everyone had gone, Lucas clasped Sloane’s hand, their fingers interlocking. “Let’s go.”
He opened the passenger door and leaned in to fasten her seat belt, his lips brushing dangerously close to her cheek. “Sit tight.”
The sports car roared through the night, finally stopping atop a hill on the city’s edge. From here, the glittering lights stretched as far as the eye could see. Lucas pulled a blanket from the trunk, spreading it across the hood before carefully helping Sloane up.
“Cold?” He slipped off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders, drawing her against his chest.
Resting against his steady heartbeat, Sloane suddenly chuckled. “So tonight wasn’t Samson’s treat after all?”
Lucas didn’t flinch. “No. I hosted.”
How could she not understand his intention? And somehow, the fact that it was him doing such a thing made it all the more novel.
Lucas lowered his head and brushed her lips with a gentle kiss, openly confessing, “I just wanted everyone to know-you’re mine.”
The autumn night carried a chill, yet Sloane felt only heat coursing through her. She gazed up at the man who to the world was cold and commanding, but to her was impossibly tender, and warmth welled in her chest.
“Lucas,” she whispered, “actually…”
Before she could finish, his kiss silenced her.
When at last he pulled away, Lucas reached into his suit pocket for his phone. With one arm looped around her shoulders, their cheeks pressed together, he tapped the screen. “Be good. Look at the camera.”
Still flushed from the kiss, Sloane lifted her gaze toward the lens. Just then, harsh headlights cut across the night.
