The noise stopped instantly. The young man in front stiffened, eyeing him warily. “Who are you? You know me?”

Lucas reached out and switched off the headlights. As the blinding beams faded, Bryan finally saw the man standing before him.

“Mr. Hawthorne?” Bryan’s knees nearly buckled, his voice breaking. “And… Dr. Rivers?”

Bryan was Benjamin’s nephew, of course he recognized Lucas and Sloane.

The scene froze into silence. The racers who’d been shouting a moment earlier all stumbled back three steps. The silver-haired man collapsed on the ground, his face ashen.

Sloane gave a faint, cool smile. “This Mr. Consuela made a bet with us. The loser crawls down the mountain. But it seems he… isn’t very good at keeping his word.”

Cold sweat broke across Bryan’s forehead. He spun and kicked the silver-haired man hard. “You idiot! You dared provoke Mr. Hawthorne and Dr. Rivers?”

Lucas adjusted his cuff with unhurried grace. “Bryan. Handle him. And remember-keep it legal. No deaths.”

“Yes, yes, Mr. Hawthorne, don’t worry!” Bryan bobbed his head.

Lucas was just about to lead Sloane away when a girl suddenly darted out of the crowd. She ran straight to Sloane. “Dr. Rivers, I don’t want to stay here. Please, can you take me with you?”

She looked about sixteen or seventeen, her delicate face tense with unease, entirely out of place in the rough crowd. Sloane’s eyes caught on her neatly trimmed nails, rounded and clean.

“What’s going on?” Lucas’s sharp gaze cut over the girl before turning to Bryan. “This your doing?”

“She’s not with me!” Bryan stammered, sweat dripping as he grabbed a blond youth from the group. “You! Did you bring her?”

The boy faltered. “B-Brother Zhuo, I… I just brought her to hang out, nothing else, I swear…”

Lucas’s expression darkened. His long finger tapped once in Bryan’s direction. “Explain this to your uncle yourself.”

Bryan’s face drained of color. He opened his mouth, but Lucas had already turned away, pulling the car door open for Sloane. The girl in white obediently followed them, slipping quietly into the back seat.

Inside, she softly gave an address to an upscale neighborhood. “Please stop at Glacial Bay.”
