Bella stared into the mirror, her expression hardening, determination flickering in her eyes. She slowly opened the window, letting the night breeze brush against her delicate face.
She couldn’t keep waiting for fate to decide her life.
The next day, Sloane devoted herself to treating the seventeen patients with memory damage. As for Bella, she had all but forgotten her. She never expected the girl to show up in person the very next day to give thanks.
The doorbell at the Hawthorne estate chimed softly.
Butler Morris opened the door to find a girl in a neat school uniform standing outside, a carefully wrapped gift box cradled in her hands.
“Hello, I’m Bella. Yesterday Dr. Rivers and Mr. Hawthorne brought me home, so I came today to thank them,” the girl said gently, bowing with polite grace.
Morris took in her clean, modest appearance. “Please wait a moment. I’ll announce you.”
In the study, Lucas was working through documents. When Morris reported, he frowned. “Bella?”
“The same girl you and Ms. Rivers drove home last night,” Morris clarified. “She says she wants to thank you both in person.”
Without looking up, Lucas said flatly, “Not necessary. Send her away.”
Returning to the door, Morris politely relayed the message. Bella’s face flickered with disappointment before softening into a smile of understanding. “It was presumptuous of me. Then may I trouble you to pass this gift to Dr. Rivers instead?”
She offered the box with both hands. “Inside are cookies I baked myself, along with a thank-you card.”
Morris accepted it, noting the hand-drawn card affixed to the box, a smiling cartoon face sketched in bright colors. Bella explained shyly, “I heard Dr. Rivers treats many patients every day. The cookies might give her a little energy boost…”
“I’ll see that she receives them,” Morris replied with a nod.
As he watched Bella leave, he carried the gift to the kitchen for inspection. The cookies smelled warm and sweet, each one shaped like a small animal, crafted with care.
At that moment, Sloane was in a special ward at the hospital, focused on treating her first patient-a seven- year-old boy lying motionless on the bed, his eyes vacant.
“Martin, can you hear me?” she asked softly as her silver needle slipped precisely into an acupuncture point on his head.
The boy’s eyes shifted faintly, though he gave no answer. On the monitor, his brainwaves spiked with unusual activity.
“Dr. Rivers, here’s the latest bloodwork,” a nurse said, handing over a file. “The neurotoxin levels have
