After taking her medicine, Sloane lay back down. She glanced at Lucas once, then obediently closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

When she woke again, it was already the next day.

The hospital room door was knocked on gently before opening. Conor and the mayor stepped inside, followed by several senior officials.

Conor wore a sharp military uniform, medals glinting on his chest. His posture was firm, but his gaze held an unusual gentleness. He walked up to the bed and gave Sloane a formal salute.

“Dr. Rivers, on behalf of the nation and its people, I offer you the highest respect,” his voice was low and steady. “If not for your sacrifice, the consequences of this disaster would have been unimaginable.”

The mayor stepped forward and held out a gold-embossed document. “The state has decided to award you the Medal of Honor. This is the first time such recognition has been given to a medical professional.” He paused, his tone even more solemn. “At the same time, the National Health Commission will assemble a special medical team dedicated to your recovery, and you will receive a lifetime medical stipend.

Sloane pressed her lips together, her voice still weak. “I only did what I was supposed to do.”

Conor shook his head. “No, your contribution went far beyond that. You not only saved seventeen lives, but more importantly, you stopped this crisis before it could spread.” His expression darkened. “Experts have confirmed that if the toxin had gotten out, it could have triggered a nationwide outbreak. The consequences would have been catastrophic.”

Sloane was silent for a moment before she lifted her eyes. “Conor, what about Samantha? Can you be certain she isn’t still holding onto the toxin?”

Conor’s expression grew grim. “We secretly searched her place and didn’t find any remaining samples. But to uncover the foreign black-market network behind her, we couldn’t arrest her yet.” He lowered his voice. “She’s dangerous. If we push her too hard, we’re afraid she might do something reckless.”

Sloane’s fingers tightened slightly. Lucas immediately noticed her unease and rubbed his thumb gently across the back of her hand, a silent comfort.

“But don’t worry,” Conor’s voice was firm. “She’s under constant watch. She won’t get the chance to make another move. We won’t give her another chance to hurt anyone.”

Sloane gave a faint nod, though worry still lingered in her eyes.

The television was tuned to the noon news. The anchor smiled as she reported, “Thanks to Dr. Sloane’s antidote, all seventeen patients suffering from memory damage have fully recovered and been discharged from the hospital…”

Crash!

A crystal wine glass shattered against the wall, scarlet liquid streaking down the white paint. Samantha’s chest heaved as her nails dug deep into her palm.

“Sloane, why won’t you just die!” She spat through clenched teeth, her beautiful face twisted with rage.
