Samantha shot him a vicious glare before yanking open her bag to check inside. Only when she confirmed everything was still there did she let out a breath of relief.
“Next time, you won’t walk away so easy. Now get out of my sight!” she snapped before storming toward the elevator in a blaze of anger.
As the intern bent to gather the last of his papers, the faintest hint of a smile tugged at his lips.
Samantha might have gotten her hands on the toxin, but she had no way of getting close to Sloane now- let alone poisoning her.
At eleven that night, the sharp click of heels echoed down the hall. Samantha carried two glasses of red wine as she stopped outside Adrian’s study. The wine shimmered in the glass, picking up the same bold red as her painted lips. She tapped gently on the door, her voice dripping with sweetness. “Adrian, may I come in?”
Adrian was studying a stack of files when a flicker of surprise flashed behind his gold-rimmed glasses. He set down his pen and looked up as Samantha pushed the door open. She was wearing a black slip dress, its straps so thin they looked ready to snap at any moment.
“It’s late. What is it?” His tone carried more weight than usual.
Samantha set the glasses on his desk, her fingertip brushing deliberately across the back of his hand. “I heard you landed a big case,” she said, leaning forward just enough for her neckline to dip in a teasing curve. “I thought… maybe I’d celebrate with you early.”
Adrian’s fists curled tight under the desk. Ever since Samantha had confronted him about his feelings, he hadn’t had a full night’s sleep.
“You can celebrate after the case is won.” He deliberately laid his pen across the space between them, the metal barrel gleaming cold in the light. “It’s late. You should go back.”
Samantha let out a low, knowing laugh, her nails flicking the pen aside. She knew exactly what that movement would do-the way her robe slipped, the way his eyes followed.
“What are you afraid of?” she asked, sliding onto the desk, her heel brushing his suit pants. “Afraid of me…” The cold rim of her wineglass pressed to his throat. “Or afraid you can’t control yourself?”
The wine spilled as she leaned closer, running down his collarbone. Adrian jerked forward, gripping her wrist, but the instant he felt her pulse beneath his fingers, he recoiled as if burned.
“What is it you want me to do this time?” His voice was rough, breaking with strain.
Samantha traced the hard line of his jaw with a slow fingertip, her lips curling into a sly smile. “Why do you always think I want something from you?” She lifted the glass to his mouth, her voice low and teasing. “Tonight… I just want to drink with you.”
The wine slid past his lips as she tilted the glass, its taste mixing with the heavy sweetness of her perfume. His temples throbbed with the rush of it.
“Samantha, do you have any idea what you’re doing?” His voice was rough, his forehead beaded with sweat.
