Chapter 378 Mask Slips Pretty Quick
Just then, a soft knock sounded at the door.
“Come in.” Sloane instantly shifted into a weary expression.
Adrian stepped inside, carrying a cup of hot milk. “Sloane, you must be tired; have some milk.”

Sloane accepted the cup, her sharp eyes catching the faint tremor in his fingertips. She pretended to take a sip.
“Do you need something, Adrian?” she asked, lifting her gaze.
Adrian lingered awkwardly at the doorway, his eyes flickering. “I… I came to apologize.”
He moved closer, his voice heavy with a forced choke. “All these years, I’ve wronged you…”
Sloane set the cup down without expression, her fingertips tapping lightly along the rim. “Oh? Did your conscience suddenly wake up?”
“I know you hate me.” Adrian suddenly dropped to his knees, his eyes bloodshot. “But I truly regret it. Only after you left the family-cutting ties with us-did I realize how cruel we had been to you.”
Sloane regarded his clumsy performance with icy detachment, a mocking curve tugging at her lips. “And so?”
“I want to help you,” Adrian said urgently. “Father never meant well. He just wants to trick you into securing that project…” He lowered his voice to a near whisper. “And then he plans to find a way to cast you aside.”
“Is that so?” Sloane leaned forward, her gaze sharp as a blade. “And what about you?”
“Me?” Adrian’s eyes flickered with guilt before he masked it. “I can help you. If you’ll let me, I can free you completely from the Rivers family…”.
“And in return? What do you need from me?” Sloane’s half-smile carried no warmth.
A glint of greed flashed across Adrian’s eyes.
He dropped his voice. “Sloane, if you help me gain controlling shares of the company, I promise no one from the Rivers family will ever bother you again.”
He rushed on, “Dad is old; he doesn’t understand management. If not for me working behind the scenes all these years, the company would’ve collapsed already…”
“So,” Sloane drawled, cutting him off, “you want me to help you seize the throne?”
Adrian’s expression shifted, then quickly softened into one of false sincerity. “Not seizing power. It’s a reasonable transfer of authority. If you’d just use your Hawthorne connections to back me…”
Sloane suddenly laughed; the sound made Adrian’s skin crawl. “Adrian do you all really think I’m such a fool-so easy to deceive?”
