Lucas raised an eyebrow, silently watching her.

Suddenly, Sloane leaned forward and hooked her finger around his tie, giving it a slight tug.
Lucas leaned in under the pressure, their faces drawing close in an instant, their breaths brushing together, warm and intimate.
Sloane’s fingers traced lazy circles on the front of his shirt, the movement slow and teasing.
A strange tingling shot through Lucas’s chest like an electric current, making his gaze darken instantly. One look into her clear eyes, and he knew–she was doing this on purpose.
He frowned slightly, voice low and gentle. “What happened?”
Lucas’s voice was rich and velvety, smooth as aged wine. When it reached her ears, Sloane felt like her eardrums were melting.
She smiled faintly, though her eyes remained cold. “Nothing. The Rivers family couldn’t pressure me into going willingly, so they decided to gift–wrap me and drop me off in your bed to win your favor—and get you to save their precious son.”
Seeing the icy chill in her eyes, Lucas felt a deep, protective tug in his chest. An unfamiliar ache bloomed inside him.
He raised a hand and gently stroked the top of her head, his touch as careful as if he were calming a wounded creature.
Sloane froze slightly. For a second, it reminded her of her master, and her nose stung with sudden emotion.
She blinked hard, forcing back the moisture welling in her eyes. Then she slapped his hand away. “I’m not a child.”
She stepped back, trying to put some space between them–but her foot landed on the pen holder that had fallen during the earlier fight. She lost her balance and tipped backward.

Lucas reacted in a flash. He reached out and caught her waist–but the momentum was too much, and he lost his balance too.
With a heavy thud, they both fell onto the bed. Lucas held her protectively in his arms, her back sinking into the plush mattress. His arms braced on either side of her, their faces just inches apart.
Sloane looked up–and found herself locked in his deep, worried gaze. Their breaths tangled in the tight space between them, warm and uneven.
She raised a hand to push him off–but when her hand landed on his shoulder, she suddenly pulled him down instead.
Caught off guard, Lucas was pulled straight into her. Their bodies pressed fully together.
Then a pair of scorching hot hands boldly slipped under his shirt, roaming freely across his skin. At the same time, Sloane burrowed into his arms, pawing open his collar and nuzzling her face against his chest.
Lucas jolted, startled. But he quickly realized something was wrong. Her cheeks were burning, her eyes unfocused, her breathing fast and laced with an involuntary moan.
She’d been drugged.
Before he could decide what to do, her burning face nuzzled into his neck and she murmured, “So cool… Feels nice…”
Her hot breath fanned across his ear. Lucas’s eyes darkened further. He was just about to raise his hand to knock her out-
But Sloane grabbed his wrist, clinging to him as she pressed closer, mumbling, “Just a little longer… let me stay like this… just a little…”
Lucas narrowed his eyes. Her voice sounded almost too clear.
At that moment, noise broke out outside the door, but Lucas ignored it.
