Chapter 53 Anyone Else Would’ve Been Thrown Out

Listening to him speak, Sloane suddenly felt like she was being lectured by a father scolding his daughter.

She blinked twice and offered an explanation. “I only had a little bit. If I just rode it out, the effects would pass quickly.”

Then she muttered under her breath, “If it had been anyone else, I would’ve thrown them out already.”

“Even if it was me, that’s still not okay!” Lucas snapped, clearly agitated.

Sloane didn’t understand why he was suddenly so fired up. She didn’t even realize how telling her words had been–she had only let him stay. If it had been any other man, she really would’ve thrown them out without hesitation.

Lucas also realized he’d overreacted. He cleared his throat and was just about to say something else when a knock came from the door.

He let out a quiet sigh of relief and stood to answer it. Halfway there, he glanced back at Sloane to make sure she was fully dressed before opening the door.

Sloane remained oblivious, pouring herself another cup of tea. Lucas really did live up to his ethereal reputation–even his tea tasted better than anyone else’s.

Back on the mountain, her master had always been fond of tea, but she’d hated it. She used to get scolded for not appreciating it.

If it were Lucas brewing it, her master probably would’ve approved.

From outside the door came the sound of voices. Sloane recognized one of them -it was Andrew,

She caught snippets like “reporters… dealt with…”

After Andrew’s report, a chilling aura radiated off Lucas, making Andrew shiver despite himself.

“How did those reporters find out?” Lucas’s voice was low and tight, like the heavy air before a storm.

Andrew lowered his head, not daring to meet his gaze. “We’re still investigating, but early signs suggest someone from the Rivers family leaked it on purpose.”

The Rivers family really had the guts to try using him. They must have a death wish.

Even Andrew could see what they were up to. Of course Lucas already had it figured out. They wanted to use compromising photos to threaten him.

And they didn’t even hesitate to drug their own flesh and blood.

The thought that Sloane, like him, had been betrayed by her own family, filled Lucas with rage–and a deep ache.

With a single gesture, he could crush the Rivers family. But this was Sloane’s fight. She had her own plans. He had to respect that.

After a moment of silence, he said, “You don’t need to get involved in the Rivers family business just yet. I remember the main branch was very interested in that land near Southville.”

“Yes,” Andrew replied. “They’ve been planning to build a large theme park there.”

He knew all of Stonebridge’s developments like the back of his hand. That particular lot had been dismissed by their team as too small to bother with.

“What a coincidence,” Lucas said with a glint in his eye and a faint smirk. “I’m suddenly very interested in that land too.”

The second Andrew saw that smile, he knew the Rivers main branch was in serious

trouble.

From what he knew, they were banking heavily on that piece of land–so much so that they’d halted a highly profitable project just to focus on it. If they failed to secure the Southville site, this year would be a catastrophic loss.

But really, that had nothing to do with them. They only had themselves to blame for being weak.
