Jill kept going. “At first, I didn’t believe him. I wanted to call and check with you. But somehow, my phone had no signal at all. I was so worried about you, I just went with him.”

Shane’s expression darkened, but he still refused to back down. “You’re making things up! Got any proof? You think a few words from you are enough to convict me?”

He thrashed against the grip on him, trying to break free.

Andrew pressed him down hard, pinning him in place. “Ms. Besnard probably ran into a signal jammer.”

“Maybe,” Jill replied indifferently. She walked up and slammed her foot into Shane’s gut.

She didn’t hold back. Shane screamed, his body curling in on itself like a shrimp. All that arrogance on his face vanished in an instant.

Jill crouched down beside him, ignoring the pain in her own body. She grabbed a fistful of his hair and yanked his head up until his eyes met hers.

“Shane,” she said, each word sharp and deliberate, “you really think you’re walking away from this?”

“Evidence?” Her voice twisted into a laugh, full of cold contempt. “I am the evidence. I say it was you–so it was you. You think a family like the Durands, who made their money off loan sharking and tearing down homes, can puff up your chest in front of me?”

Her grip tightened. Shane winced as pain shot across his scalp.

“If the Besnard family lifts a finger, we could wipe the Durands off the map in Stonebridge.”

Sweat dripped down Shane’s forehead in thick drops. Still, he gritted his teeth and barked, “Come at me all you want! This has nothing to do with my family!”

Jill didn’t even bother replying.

Andrew gave a signal, and the guards dragged Shane off with a hand clamped over his mouth. Sloane hadn’t said a word through it all. Something was clearly turning over in her mind. Jill tightened the blanket around herself and scoffed. “Idiot. Didn’t even know he was being

Sloane turned toward her in surprise. Jill was always the carefree, no–filter type–but right now, her words cut straight through the noise.

Jill kept going. “They pulled this crap now because of the video I have. They don’t want us at the welcome party tonight.”

She was holding a video of the bet between Sloane, Summer, and Samantha. If they wanted it gone, and wanted her out of the picture, this kind of ambush was the only fast option they had left.

Shane had probably been dropped the second he got exposed in that forum thread. Samantha had no use for him anymore.
