Sloane was called into Mr. Samson’s office–and was surprised to find Marshall already there.

He was sitting on the couch, and the moment she walked in, his face turned cold.

“Sloane, ever since you started school, you’ve completely cut ties with the family. What are you trying to pull? Do you even still consider me your father?” he snapped, his voice thick with

accusation.

Sloane’s expression didn’t waver. She calmly closed the office door, walked over to a chair, and sat down without a rush.

“Ms. Marshall,” she said coolly, “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”

A faint smirk tugged at the corners of her lips. Her eyes met Marshall’s without hesitation. “Cut ties with who, exactly? Did any of you even bother to get my contact information?”

Ever since she’d moved into the Rivers household, no one had asked for her number. The only person who even gave her a phone was Lena.

Once she enrolled at Stonebridge University, of course they had no way to reach her.

Marshall’s face stiffened at her words, and his voice grew louder, tinged with anger. “Watch your mouth! I’m your father!”

Sloane rolled her eyes in open contempt and was about to say something even sharper–when Mr. Samson cut in.

“Sloane, don’t be impulsive. Talk things out properly,” he advised gently.

Mr. Samson had always appreciated Sloane’s brilliance and didn’t want rumors going around about her being disrespectful to elders.

Marshall quickly picked up the cue. “Mr. Samson, thank you for all your hard work with this child, She’s a bit difficult. I’m here to request a short leave of absence to take her home for a bit.”

“Sure, go ahead,” Mr. Samson agreed easily.

Sloane didn’t want to go back to the Rivers house, especially not with Marshall–but she knew this wasn’t a trip she could avoid. So she said nothing more.
