“The King is here.” Whispers ripple among the maids, each alerting the next before it can reach but it’s too late.

my sisters
I catch them in the act. I pause in the doorway of Mearez’s bedchamber, staring at her. Slowly, I shift my gaze to Serena, who quickly focuses on the wall as if seeing it for the first time.
I step further into the room, eyes flicking between the luggage and Mearez, now glaring at her.
A week has passed, tension flaring with every breath. The elders urge me to attend to Cyran Selric, arriving today with her father, as my bride.
Meanwhile, news came to the Black Tower just as I brood over my woman’s absence, the unending agony clawing at me.
News that says My sisters are leaving the Royal building for another home, and it turns me inside out. I swallow hard, staring at the maids as they rush out silently, obeying my unsaid command. The door clicks shut, leaving heavy silence.
“Unpack your dresses and go about your days as princesses,” I murmur.
Serena looks up, rubbing her nape, murmuring,
“Cyran Selric arrives today, and you will want to reject her. We don’t want you to suffer because of us.”
“We are not truly princesses anyway,” Mearez mutters softly. “We will move out to the…”
“Will you shut up?” I grit out. Both of you, will you shut it?”
“Lycan…”
“Call my name again and I’ll have you on house arrest for the rest of the year,” I snap at Serena. She frowns, knowing better than to call my words bkuff. She’s lived it once before.
I sigh shakily, running my fingers through my hair to steady myself. I walk toward Mearez, seated on the bed, and lower myself beside her.
“Serena?” I call, and she comes from behind, sitting as well. I stare at both of them. “I love you both… more than anything in this world, but that won’t stop me from inflicting pain if you push me.”
Fear flashes in their eyes, but they remain silent.
“I don’t want to hear it anymore. Anything about leaving? I will have none of it.”
“But it is true. Since father isn’t our biological father…” Serena begins, but pauses, meeting my gaze.
“Do you want me to send you to live with my brother Hades?” I ask.
She lowers her gaze, shaking her head. Of course she won’t want that. Hades is far worse than I am; while I grant freedom and daily tasks, Hades would never allow them to leave their chambers.

“The woman father wanted me to marry is coming today, and I will deal with it once and for all. Serena, return to the marketplace and restore peace among the Lycans as usual. Mearez, go to the healing wing and bring peace to the sick. You both do what you do best and leave me to worry about everything.
Understand?”
“A royal decree,” he says, threatening.
“Royal decree of a dead man. Abusive,” I reply, slowly approaching. The elders step back, leaving him to my gaze. I take the scroll gently and lean in to whisper, “Do you know why I abandoned my father’s ashes in the public memorial hall in the werewolf world? Because I did not want him to find peace. Push me too hard…

your ashes may follow before the day ends.”
He shudders. I pull back, watching his face blanch.
I turn to the burning hearth and fling the scroll into the flames.

“If any wrath comes from this, let it fall on me. I have survived cursed. I will survive anything more.” I turn toward the exit, glancing over my shoulder. “You’ve heard the rumors. I have a woman. I am committed to her. Doubt it and lose your life.”
