I recall stepping into the holy chamber, yet what greets me is nothing like I imagined. The space stretches endlessly, a landscape familiar yet strange.
My eyes scan, recognizing the battlegrounds I have walked before, the ground soaked with memories of loss, where heads were severed, where countless warriors perished.
Why here? Why now?
“Because it is the exact place where you have lost more than the world knows, and yet, where you have earned everything beyond measure.” The voice echoes, reverberating through my very bones, sending a thrill cascading down my spine.
The kind of thrill that makes my knees want to bend, my heart bow in reverence. I know who it is without needing to look.
I lower my gaze, heart tightening as I feel her attention upon me. The empty battlefield before me seems alive, breathing, and swallowing me in its weight. Everything I lost, everything I fought for… could it all be here?
“Yes,” she replies, as if reading my thoughts. “That is exactly what I mean. You did me proud. As a young woman, sword flying like a goddess, you restored balance to my world. You prevailed.”
I swallow hard, voice barely a whisper.
“And yet… you set a clause for my happiness. Should I not deserve more than this?”
Silence presses in, thick and heavy. I feel the shift in the air, the weight of her presence settling around me.
“You are a woman I have held close in my heart, one I will spare again and again from all harm. You have my blessing as a warrior. Blessed with a great white wolf… and yet you walk into the arms of a Blood to be, tainted. You ask why I must withhold happiness?”
My chest tightens, the wind around me almost solid, ready to push me down.
“The priestess sends your words to me,” I murmur. “I accept the blessing, but I do not accept the mate you have chosen, nor the cruel clause set before I can rise as Alpha.”
“Really?” Her tone carries the weight of storms, and I sense the thunder coming. Yet I stand my ground.
“I am Ashmere. I sealed the portal from the demon invaders. I honor your name, your world, and yet I walked away asking nothing in return. In that war, I lost everything. And now that I have found a way to be happy… you become a roadblock. A hurdle. I deserve more.”
Silence envelops me, broken only by the whispers of unseen winds. I feel the weight of her judgment, the truth of my defiance.
“Nyroth Hue of the Hue Pack is your mate, Zephyrine Ashmere. He alone can give you offspring.”
My heart sinks. I whirl, and a cold wind sweeps through me.

“What if I claim him regardless?” I whisper, raw with pain. “What if I choose him even after becoming Alpha?”
“Shepherd your courage, Ashmere. You shall not be involved with any man except your second chance mate. Defy this, and ruin will fall upon your pack. Now kneel, and receive your blessing.”
I force myself to kneel, trembling, chest heaving. The thrill surges through me again, stirring goosebumps across my skin.
“Your forefathers were mighty warriors, bringing peace across my world. You inherit their legacy. For that, I have grant every Alpha like them a spirit guard to walk beside them, loyal unto death. Your father, the last warlord of the Shifter Empire, received an enchanted sword. Now you will receive yours. Zephyrine Ashmere.”
Goosebumps rose in my skin, my heart tightening with reverence.
“Bound by the power of light. Surrounded by the mercy of the goddess beyond all gods and beings, I grant you, Zephyrine Ashmere, Twentieth Alpha of Ash Pack, wisdom, strength, and grace to rule over your pack. Rise, receive your spirit guard, and lead Ash Pack.”
I obey, rising to find… a storm before me. My eyes widen as the heavy breaths draw near. Towering, powerful, emanating heat. I turn to see my spirit guard. My jaw drops. Graceful beyond imagining, my heart skips at the sight.
Not a sword, not a shield, but a presence foretelling both protection and coming doom. My spirit guard… is a dragon.
