The rituals were completed. I had drunk, I had eaten the necessary, and I had spoken the words that bound Jurrek to me. Now I could feel his energy clearer than ever.

But aside from that, I felt weak. All I wanted was to lay in bed with Lycannar and not wake until the pain waned. Yet that night, I found myself standing before the building where Luna Tahlia resided in my pack.

Jurrek had brought word that she wished for a visit, and tonight I chose to spare her my attention. Tomorrow is the eve of the full moon, and if I recalled correctly, it will be the day Lycannar’s Beta would take the vow with him.

The night was cold, aura heavy around me, court ladies trailing behind. Guards were not yet assigned, but I intended to make arrangements before bed.

At last, the door opened, and she appeared, carrying young Black in her arms. She bowed deeply, but I ignored the gesture, instead taking the child from her.

A smile curled at the corner of my lips as the boy reached for my face, but soon sadness sank in. A pup. Something I might never have.

I lowered my gaze and passed young Black into Blue’s arms. Just like that, my mood shifted.

I walked ahead, beckoning Luna Tahlia to join me.

“How is Ash Pack treating you?” I asked. She faltered in her steps, forcing me to stop as well.

I turned toward her under the path of the lit lamps, the dark sky broad above us. She stared at me as though

I were not even real, then bowed again, unable to contain her thoughts.

“Alpha Zephyrine,” she whispered.

I swallowed hard. The title felt heavier than anything I had ever wanted to bear.

“You should not be so formal. Soon you will be the mother of an Alpha. Do not bow before me.”

To this, she swallowed and stepped closer, sighing.

“About that… I have thought long on it.” I studied her, seeing the change in her spirit. “Peace… it is here. After that night my mother died, something in me shifted. I no longer wish for that post for young Black.”

“Luna Tahlia…”

“You are an Alpha. A warrior. You command the largest and most respected pack, and I have seen what you are capable of. You are pure. You kill only for justice, for peace but the Yadev…. they are cruel. They are worse. I do not want to cross their path again. I was only lucky you saved me that night. I want nothing with them. Let them have the pack.”

She was panicking, her voice trembling, yet she sounded reasonable. Still, I did not agree. I stepped closer,

“You truly would let Kaela and her father go free after what they did to you?” I asked, and she swallowed hard. “The disgrace. The lies. The pack they stole?”

“But…”

“You still have followers, Luna Tahlia. Many would despise the Yadevs‘ rule. Would you not save them?”

She lowered her gaze, sadness flickering across her face, and I caught it.”

“If it were up to me, I would never let Kaela go so easily,” she admitted; looking up with a shaky sigh. “My husband and I had the perfect relationship until she began seducing him after returning from her mission of peace. The night I caught them in bed together… everything changed. She is a wrecker. You cannot imagine what she is truly like. You will never know.”

Her words struck me like a blade. My breath stilled, the cold night closing around me. Kaela. That vile, grasping woman.

The whispers I had heard, that Alpha Black betrayed his Luna, suddenly twisted into something darker, uglier. And now I knew.

“He said it is about Blackbridge Pack,” Jurrek adds, and Luna Tahlia and I exchange a knowing look.

“Come with me,” I say to Luna Tahlia, and Jurrek leads the way into the meeting hall.

I stop at the entrance, eyes fixed on Alpha Orod and his beta. The guards stand motionless like statues, lamp flames flickering along the walls.

Alpha Orod swallows hard as he sees me.

“You are an Alpha now. You took your vow… and yet you didn’t invite anyone to rejoice with you?”

I step forward, walking toward him.

“The ceremony will be made, Alpha Orod, I assure you. A moment that will be remembered forever. But for now… why have you come?”

He sighs and shifts his gaze to Jurrek behind me. I notice Luna Tahlia lingering in the hallway, silent, listening. I understand. Her death registration was finalized weeks ago. No one knows she is alive within my pack. Not until Alpha Orod proves his intentions will she reveal herself.

“I received an invitation from Alpha Nyroth of Hue Pack a few days ago but concerning the rumor that you are in a relationship with the Lycan King, I ignored the invitation.” he begins. “Then I ran into him at an Alphas‘ meeting earlier today. You won’t believe what he said.”

I keep my eyes on him, silent, waiting.

“He was with Kaela Yadev. They proposed a huge deal… rumors to be spread. They need Horn Pack’s support to come to Ash Pack and save it.”

I stiffen, brow arching.

“How… save Ash Pack?

“They claim it has no Alpha. That it is a pack where medals and honors earned by your forefathers were stolen and manipulated. They want to spread the rumor that the last warlord bribe the high council to earn respect, leaving the pack rotten and its members dying behind the walls. They intend to save it.”

Silence falls like a weight. I stare at Alpha Orod, yet do not truly see him. Then laughter bursts from me, startling in its intensity.

I turn to Jurrek, chuckling, and slowly make my way toward the chair. But just as suddenly, the laughter dies, replaced by something primal.

I had even considered forgiving them for taking Blackbridge Pack. The audacity of those two nitwits, thinking Ash Pack is theirs to hijack. The honors of my forefathers, achieved through blood and strategy, stolen through bribery?

Such a grave, unforgivable mistake.
