For a long moment, I simply stood in the corridor, my back resting against the wall, my hands folded on my chest, and my gaze fixed on the gate ahead.

I feel… an emptiness that twists my chest, a longing so sharp it makes me almost sick. I lower my gaze and sigh, resigned that she won’t be coming today either.

I turn slowly and step into my bed chamber, stopping in my tracks. Preparations had been made, my orders followed as well, and now standing there, I see the work done, everything more perfect than I could have imagined.

The chamber had been altered at my command. The library remained untouched, but everything else, the cloth racks, the bed, the dining table had been transformed.

The bed was the same, but its position had changed. Bed sheets, meticulously arranged. Beside my section of the clothing racks, a feminine section had been reserved for my Queen, Zephyrine.

Gowns from the finest designers, embroidered with exquisite fabrics, lined the racks. Robes, elegant shoes, everything she could possibly need and a full–length mirror stood nearby, curtained so I would not catch my reflection.

I moved toward the dining area. Small, yet exquisite. Two chairs, newly polished, and a table draped in linens embroidered with the crest of my kingdom.

Even the bed’s canopy had been altered, a thin linen curtain now wrapped delicately around it, and above, an embroidered sketch of her face, my first vision of her each morning.

Anahita had directed it all when she brought the items, unable to cross the threshold herself. She had entrusted Chantel to arrange everything. Even my bodyguard, who never takes orders from anyone, had obeyed this time, knowing it would bring me peace. For that, I appreciated him more than I could say.

I stepped quietly into the living room, and it was even more breathtaking than my bed chamber.

Everything that had once been stark and black had been softened, transformed. My two sisters were there, overseeing each detail, ensuring it was perfect.

A window I had never opened before was left ajar, letting a cool breeze drift in, the curtain swaying gently,

“Lycannar?” Serena’s voice came from behind, her eyes flicking to Mearez.

Weeks had passed, and tomorrow I would take my vow with Baron as my beta. Yet, I felt choked by it all, unable to focus. Petitions signed, decrees stamped, but meetings at the throne chamber? Those could wait.

“Are you okay?” Mearez asked. Silence stretched. For a moment, I only stared at her blankly. Then I closed the distance and embraced her. Her hug was tight, gentle, and soothing.

“You will be fine. She will come back, she assured me. “She will be back.”

My chest tightened at her words. To reveal myself to Zephyrine would be simple. What wasn’t simple was anticipating her reaction.

What if she pulled away? What if she said I wasn’t who she fell for, that we should go separate ways?

“You have to make her understand,” Serena’s voice came forward, as if reading my thoughts. “Who you are… she will accept it, because she loves you.”

“And what if she doesn’t?” I asked softly. “What if she gets scared and leaves?”

“Lycan…” Mearez began, but I whispered before she could continue.

“You know I will never let her go. Whether she wants it or not.”

I saw her gulp and then nod. Everyone knew I am already obsessed with Zephyrine. I would do everything good or bad, monstrous or tender to keep her. She is my anchor. The only woman, aside from my sister, who loved me genuinely.

I swallowed hard, thinking of another woman who had once loved me, given me her body, her heart, and her time. I could not feel for her.

Our brief relationship had left only emptiness. My demon cousin, Xyrrha Abyss, the war general who had led the grave battle five years ago. She had loved me, too, but nothing I felt for her compared to what I felt for Zephyrine.
