“Silence.” My uncle, Dareth, quickly cut the man off before he could reveal too much. “You can’t speak to the king directly. We’ll discuss this in private.”

“Of course not, Advisor!” the noble snapped back furiously. “What are you saying? After all the gold bars I paid you? After all your secrets I’ve kept?”

“You’ll hold your tongue, Pavan!” my uncle barked, his anger barely restrained. Then, lowering his tone, he added, “We’ll find a way around everything.”

“Oh, please. And how exactly will I?”

“You’ll be repaid your gold bars,” my uncle said quickly, turning toward me. “The King will pay them back.”

I raised an eyebrow at that.

“Why would I return any gold bars?”

“Because you’re the King, and you’re wealthy,” he said simply.

I gave him a slow, sharp look.

“Was I the one who accepted those gold bars in the first place?”

“What!” Gasps rippled through the hall. I nearly scoffed. Fifty gold bars? I turned to my uncle, who immediately looked away, pretending to admire the walls.
