Chapter 304

Zephyrine

The sound of footsteps came that night, and I stayed still, waiting for whoever was approaching. The door opened at last, and Isolde stepped in.

My lady, she said softly, bowing her head. You have a message from the Blackbridge Pack.”

At that, I frowned. The last time I heard that name, Blackbridge, was during my visit to the Wolf Fortress, when Kaela spun her lies about a pregnancy and whose child it was.

I’ll be out soon,” I said, and Isolde bowed again before leaving, closing the door behind her.

For a while, I leaned back against the headboard, savoring the quiet.

Several nights had passed since my visit to the Lycan Kingdom. Several nights since Jurrek spoke his truth and shed light on my darkness, light that helped me find a small place in my heart for forgiveness.

Yet, another part of me still can’t fathom why Lycannar would keep any secret from me.

For that, I don’t think I can forgive him.

Biting my lower lip, I rose from bed and headed out, ignoring everyone I passed. I couldn’t trust anyone now.

The war drums had begun to echo already, and though no armies had yet been seen near the Ash Pack, I knew they were preparing, to kill the Lycans.

I stepped into the open air and saw the messenger from Blackbridge waiting. He bowed deeply and extended a sealed letter.

Alpha Zephyrine,he said, Luna Tahlia, a current resident here, is required in the Blackbridge Pack for Young Black’s ascension. The letter explains more. Please accept it.

My eyes dropped to the parchment as I took it. A wave of unease rippled down my spine. The messenger bowed once more, mounted his horse, and rode away into the night.

Swallowing hard, I turned toward the path that led to Luna Tahlia’s residence.

Since our return from the Wolf Fortress, she had kept mostly to herself and I couldn’t blame her. Like the rest of us, she must have been disappointed at my brother, who had chosen to lash out at the wrong man instead of focusing on the Council that betrayed us.

The path to her quarters was quiet, lit by flickering lamps. The guard outside her door bowed and stepped aside as I approached. I knocked once, and the door opened moments later.

Luna Tahlia stood there, poised, composed, and weary.

Alpha Zephyrine, she greeted, stepping aside to let me in.

I took a brief look around the cozy room, noticing the faint glow of a dying hearth.

Young Black?I asked quietly.

He slept early tonight, she replied gently.

I nodded and managed a small smile before extending the letter.

From Blackbridge Pack. You should open it.”

She accepted it and unfolded the parchment. Her expression didn’t change as her eyes skimmed the words. After a moment, she looked back up at me with a faint, sad smile.

The day for Young Black’s ascension has been set. They want me to come tomorrow to sign the handover papers.”

I nodded, genuinely pleased.

That’s wonderful news. Young Black will finally take the seat that rightfully belongs to him.” But her eyesher eyes didn’t reflect joy. Instead of relief or triumph, there was sorrow. You know, she said quietly, lowering her gaze, Ihad a night with the Lycan King’s brother.

I froze.

Hades?

Yes.She met my gaze, her expression calm yet tender. And I have no regrets.

I sighed, bracing myself for what more she might say.

He didn’t promise much. We barely spoke, the emotions said enough. And before I knew it, we were in bed.She looked at me, searching. You once asked me to treat you like a sister. So pure heart?tell me, sisterwho among us has the

I swallowed hard and looked down.
