Chapter 322
Zephyrine

I tried sitting up, running my fingers through my hair to appear a bit more composed, a bit more alive.
I was breathing steadily, trying to keep my pulse in check, when the sound of footsteps echoed down the corridor. My throat went dry instantly.
I dabbed at my face, forcing a small smile, and turned toward the door just as it opened.
Lycannar stood there in the doorway.
I’d seen him calm, angry, even deadly before, but never like this. Never so quiet, so unreadable. I’d never passed out in his arms before, and the thought of how he might react now sent my heart racing.
“H…hi,” I stuttered, trying to smile.
He said nothing. His gaze fixed on me, traveling down my body before slowly rising back to my face.
Still silent, he crossed the room and sat on the chair, burying his face briefly in his palms before staring ahead into the emptiness.
The silence was heavy, unbearable. My nerves buzzed beneath my skin. When he finally turned his eyes to me, my breath caught, and I bit my lower lip.
“How do you feel now?” he asked softly.
“Fine. Much better now,” I replied quickly, rubbing the back of my neck. “I must’ve been tired. I haven’t been sleeping well and…”
The rest of my words faded as I saw his expression remain unchanged. I sighed quietly.
“Lycan… I’m so sorry I passed out.”
He looked at me for a long moment before nodding.
“You don’t need to apologize. I was worried about you,” he said quietly. “And furious at myself for letting things get so bad that you’d collapse from exhaustion.”
Exhaustion. That’s what he thought.

My heart clenched at the thought. I swallowed hard, telling myself this secret was for the best,
for now.
“I’m fine,” I assured him again.
He didn’t respond, but I could see tension in the set of his jaw. So I got out of bed and crossed to him, lowering myself onto his lap. His hands found my waist automatically, thumbs tracing slow circles against my skin.
He looked up at me, and I reached to cup his cheek, smiling softly.
“I was afraid you’d be angry with me… for worrying you.”
“I am angry with you,” he murmured, his tone deceptively calm.
I blinked.
“Lycan..”
“You should be punished,” he went on, voice low but teasing. “For scaring your king. Maybe I’ll have you kneel in the courtyard.”
I pinched his chest lightly, and his lips twitched into a faint smile. For a heartbeat, the tension between us melted away, replaced by quiet laughter. But then, his mask fell completely. The emotion in his eyes was raw, too real.
“I don’t know what I’d do if anything ever happened to you, Zephyrine,” he said. “I’m not a man who prays to the Foremother… but I did tonight. When you collapsed, I begged her whatever harm was meant for you, let it fall on me. Any agony fated for you, let me carry it. And if destiny ever decided your life should be short… I’d trade mine for yours.”
Emotion surged through me. His words hit deep, sacred in their devotion. I looked at him and, for what must have been the thousandth time, knew I had chosen right.
I leaned down and pressed my lips to his, a soft, lingering kiss.
When I pulled away, he searched my eyes.
“How was your trip to Ash Pack?” he asked gently.
The question made me pause. Slowly, I slipped off his lap and sat across from him at the table.
“Varyn wants the Alpha seat back,” I said quietly.
He raised an eyebrow.

“Why now?”
“My spirit guard,” I murmured. “If I’m stripped of my Alpha title, Le Fey will vanish.”
He went still for a moment before asking.
“Le Fey?”
“The Dragon.”
“Oh. Unique name. And your response?”

“I signed the decree but I won’t attend the ritual yet. I need time. If my dragon disappears, Varyn will start another wave of war. I need to be sure.”
Lycannar was silent for a long while. Then, to my surprise, he said,
“Maybe you should give him what he wants.”
I stared.
“What? No, I can’t.”
“You’re disobeying
