I stood before the mirror, loosening my damp hair so it fell around my waist, yet I still couldn’t wrap my head around it that my death would come from my own brother. The very brother I had loved, cherished, laughed, and dined with.
I would have called Lycannar’s words a bluff, such a big, cruel bluff, if I hadn’t already witnessed the truth of his visions. If I didn’t know how much power his curse held.
He had once said Kai would die soon… and he did. That alone was proof that when it came to death, Lycannar’s words were law.
“Don’t do that,” his voice came from behind me, calm but firm. I turned to see him watching me, nodding toward my fingers, which were nervously twisting together.
Gently, he crossed the distance between us and stopped just a step away from the mirror. For a moment, he hesitated, then stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist.
I looked at our reflection, us together, and felt a quiet blessing I never thought I’d have.
“I’ll be right here for you, always,” he murmured softly against my ear. “If it ever feels too heavy and you need to weep, my shoulder is well padded, Zephyrine.” He turned me around, his hands cupping my cheeks. “I love you. And that love is enough to last us this lifetime.”
I sighed shakily, his assurance easing the storm inside me. Rising on my toes, I kissed him gently, loving him more deeply than before.
I was about to speak when the sudden sound of porcelain shattering downstairs broke through the air. Startled, I turned to Lycannar, who looked equally confused.
Curiosity and concern pulled us out of the bedchamber. We descended the stairs together, and by the time we reached the dining hall, the scene before us froze me in shock.
Lycannar’s aunt, Eiryn, was shoving her husband, Uncle Dareth, while plates crashed around them.
“I’m done with you, Dareth! You cheating bastard!” she screamed.
Another plate flew, and Lycannar immediately pulled me behind him protectively.
My hands went to my flat stomach by instinct, to shield the unborn life inside me. Realizing it, I quickly dropped my palms and exhaled shakily.

The maids, including Blue, who had been serving dinner, had all stepped back, wide–eyed.
Uncle Dareth stood red–faced with anger, while Aunt Eiryn trembled with fury. Their three children, Lycannar’s cousins, watched in tense silence, waiting for their parents to finish before they spoke.
“I’m done with this marriage! I demand a divorce!” Aunt Eiryn cried hotly.
“And you’ll believe that lunatic Pavan over me?” Uncle Dareth shouted back. “You’ll let gossip destroy decades of our union? Really, Eiryn?”
Their argument burned through the hall, leaving everyone on edge. I looked from one face to another, trying to piece together what could have caused this, when Cealan, Uncle Dareth’s eldest son, who was rarely home stepped forward holding a scroll.
“A divorce settlement,” he announced, his tone steady. “We’ve all signed. It only needs the King’s seal to make it official. Go on.”
“What?!” Uncle Dareth roared. “You will do no such thing! How dare you betray your father?”
“You betrayed us first when you started sleeping around,” Cealan shot back coldly. “You’ve said enough. Leave with dignity while it’s still available.”
The words hit like a blow. Uncle Dareth staggered back, looking toward his second son, Baron.
“Baron? Won’t you say something? After all I’ve done to make you Beta of this kingdom?”
“I only took that position because you pressured me!” Baron snapped. “You hated Apex for nothing and wanted to seize the kingdom through me! We all want you to leave our mother.”
Uncle Dareth went pale. He turned to Beauty, his only daughter, but she only stepped behind her brothers for protection.
Breathing hard, Dareth finally turned to Lycannar, squaring his shoulders.
“You won’t stamp that divorce settlement, Apex. You know how much I’ve bled for this family. You won’t take that from me.”
Lycannar stayed silent for a long time. Then he sighed and took the scroll from Cealan’s hand.
“You cheated on my aunt,” he said evenly. “What else do you expect me to do?”
“Oh, spare me your hypocrisy,” Dareth spat bitterly. Then his eyes shifted to me, a cruel smirk

curving his lips. “And you, do you really think he’ll stay loyal only to you?”

“Stay away from my woman, Uncle Dareth,” Lycanmar warned, pulling me behind him again. His uncle faltered, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
“This is unfair! You won’t approve that divorce!”
