I looked back at the gate and beyond it, to the people walking around, peaceful, carefree, happy. My gaze lifted to the black tower standing tall and powerful in the distance. A soft sigh escaped my lips.
“I should tell Lycannar I want to leave,” I murmured, turning to go inside, but my brother caught my wrist gently and turned me around. His eyes were soft, pleading.
“He might not allow you to come along,” he said quietly. “We won’t stay long. I promise.”
I couldn’t help it this time. I nodded and let him lead me toward the horse. Varyn released my hand and stepped back, smiling that knowing smile as he waited for me to mount.
I met his gaze and, somehow, smiled back. Then I mounted the horse expertly, smirking with quiet pride.
“I still remember when you struggled to mount a horse,” he said as he came to join me.
“You taught me well. You and Father,” I replied.
He gathered the reins and smiled faintly.
“And you learned well, little sister.”
Before I could respond, Varyn kicked the horse into motion, and it galloped through the lane.
During the ride, he was gentle and careful, his hands steady on the reins.
I noticed new scars along his fingers and fresh bruises across his knuckles. I couldn’t help but wonder what he had been doing lately.
At last, we reached the foot of the mountains. The horse stopped, and Varyn dismounted first. He reached up and lifted me down effortlessly, setting me on my feet before unfastening the saddlebag. His fingers brushed mine as he took my hand, leading me up the path.
The night was cool, the sky scattered with stars, a perfect night for peace. When we reached a flat space, Varyn spread a blanket on the ground. Then he turned toward me, his gaze softening.
His hand rose to my cheek, caressing it tenderly before he lowered it again and swallowed.

“I brought some snacks. Dessyn packed them for me,” he said, leading me to sit.

He opened the saddlebag to reveal the food and a pouch of water. The sight made me smile faintly.
Dessyn truly knew what I liked. I took the dinner box, though I was too emotional to eat. I could feel Varyn’s gaze on me the entire time.
The silence lingered until he finally spoke, breaking the stillness.
“I went to the market today,” he said, pulling something from his pocket, “and I saw this.”
He held out a hairpin.
“It reminded me of you, Zephyr.”
I stared at the delicate ornament, afraid that if I met his eyes, I would lose control of my
emotions.
“It reminded me of what I forgot,” he continued softly. “That you’re my only true blood left, and how much I love you.”
My throat tightened. I lowered my gaze, blinking away tears. Then his fingers closed gently around my hand, urging me to look up. His eyes glistened.
“I’ve never been more ashamed of myself than I am before you now, Zephyr. Knowing how I failed you, how I hurt you. My own little sister, whom I should’ve protected. I’ve feared for so long that no one could love me the way you did. And I don’t deserve your forgiveness now, do
I?”
I searched his eyes, tears trailing down my cheeks. For a long while, I said nothing. Then, finally, I sniffed softly.
“I believed… I tried to believe I regretted saving you from Blackwater, Varyn.”
“Zephyr…”
“I told myself it was over, that you couldn’t be saved. But seeing you tonight, I realize how wrong I was. Mother always said we must lift each other when we fall. That’s why she trained us together.”
He looked at me with disbelief, as if stunned that I could ever think saving him was a mistake. Quietly, he placed the hairpin in my palm and gave my hand a firm squeeze.
“Tomorrow morning, all the warriors I gathered will disperse,” he said solemnly. “Each will go

home. From now on, I just want peace. Maybe I’ll even marry Dessyn and close this chapter by becoming a family man.”
1 froze, searching his face for any hint of deceit. He only smiled faintly.
“I swear it, Zephyr,” he said. “Tomorrow, the last warrior will be dismissed. No more war. I’ll get married, live quietly. You can take the Alpha seat, it’s stressful ruling, anyway.”
I exhaled shakily, the relief washing through me. Who would have thought a night like this would ever come?
“You know…” I said softly, meeting his gaze again. “I’m also getting married to Lycannar after the full moon.”
