I walked silently into the Lycan Kingdom, listening to the fading gallop of horse hooves behind me. Varyn riding away into the night.

I stepped into the long dining hall, crossed it quietly, and climbed the stairs. The corridors were empty, the air still. I went through the living room and into the bedchamber, but Lycannar wasn’t there.

Moving toward the corridor, I paused by the window and saw Varyn still riding fast toward Ash Pack.

We had spoken, we had agreed. Words would be sent soon, words that would make me act. I would renounce my claim as Alpha, and he would take back his seat. Peace would finally reign.

The thought filled me with quiet joy. A smile crept to my lips as I imagined how to break the news to Lycannar. But before I could, I heard a sound from the hall. Curiosity sparked in me. I thought it might be him.

I stepped out of the bedchamber, only to see Chantel standing at the end of the hall, right before the door to his room. I studied him a moment, frowning slightly.

Is everything okay?I asked softly.

He didn’t respond. He only stared, unblinking. For a moment, I thought he was being strange again, but then I remembered. He was a demon. Strange came naturally to him.

I sighed and turned to head back into my room, but then the sound of footsteps echoed from the staircase. Moments later, Lycannar appeared.

Relief flooded me, but it died quickly when I saw the hard line of his jaw and the unreadable expression on his face.

His hair was wet which means he must have come to bathe and hadn’t found me inside. That must be why he was angry.

Apex?Chantel’s voice broke the tense silence. Lycannar turned to him.

Yes?

You should check on Ravana. She’s been acting up.

I blinked. That was the longest sentence I’d ever heard Chantel say. Lycannar frowned slightly, brushing past him and entering his chamber.

I waited, curious about what might have happened to the talking raven. A moment later, Lycannar came out again, the bird perched on his finger.

What’s wrong with her?he murmured, studying her closely. Did she cat something she’s allergic to?

Chantel shook his head.

Should I call upon your sister?

Yeah. Call Mearez.

Chantel nodded, then walked past me and disappeared down the stairs. Lycannar brushed by me in silence, heading toward our chamber. Panic stirred in my chest, my mate was clearly

upset.

Biting my lip, I followed him in. He was seated now, the raven on the table before him. He studied the bird intently, waiting for Mearez to arrive.

I stood at the doorway for a moment before clearing my throat to get his attention. He didn’t even glance at me.

Maybe it’s just a normal sickness,” I said lightly, walking closer and sitting across from him. We wolves fall ill too sometimes.

He said nothing at first, then finally spoke, his voice flat.

Ravana shares the same energy with the witch in the Demon Realm. Ilythra was never sick.”

His tone made goosebumps rise along my arms. I bit my lower lip again.

I’m sorry,I whispered.

That finally made him look up. His pale golden eyes lifted to mine, and I froze beneath their intensity.

Lycan..

I know you can take care of yourself,he said, his voice calm but heavy. But don’t you ever go off without telling me again. You’re going to be my wife. I know you’re an Alpha, strong, capable, but I’m still your mate. I deserve to know where you arewho you’re with.”
