I flutter my eyelids open to see the beautiful Kaela beside me. She isn’t sleeping, instead, she’s staring at me with a smile on her face, her breast pressed against my chest. She appears to be everything I’ve ever wanted.

I never knew I would stay this long in the Blackbridge Pack, not until the sky had already darkened.

“I need to go home,” I said softly to her, but she only leaned in and kissed my lips. I gently reached for her waistline, caressing

When she pulled back, she reached for her dress and walked to the mirror, where she sat and picked up a comb.

I got up as well, dressing quickly just as the door opened and Yadev, Kaela’s father, walked in. He wasn’t surprised to see me here. I wasn’t just visiting today.

“You both have finished,” he said casually. A man with a heavy mustache and thick eyelashes, his eyes shifted to Kaela.

“Have you spoken to him about the arrangements?”

“Yes, Father. We will get it done in no time.”

“I know someone who can forge the medical report. A midwife that can give a false statement. Let me know when you are ready to strike.””

“Yes, Father.” She smiled deliciously at him, and he winked back before nodding toward me.

“Good job, son.”

“Thanks”

With that, he left, making me wonder briefly how people could be so different beneath the surface.

They spoke about evil so casually.

I finished dressing and headed toward the window, spotting my carriage waiting outside with Kai standing beside it.

“Shall we?” came Kaela’s voice. I turned to see her fully dressed.

“You… you’re going somewhere?”

“No. I only want to see you off to your carriage.”

We headed out quickly, and when we reached the carriage, I saw Kai speaking with four men.

“Ah, Alpha Nyroth,” Kai said. “These men here want to see you. They say it’s about someone who lives in the Hue Pack”

I stepped forward, studying them. Their scent was different. Rogues. My brows lifted as I realized exactly who they were.

“You are the Alpha of Hue Pack?” one of them, the leader, it seemed asked, but I didn’t answer.

“There is a woman we are looking for. The one who caught the King’s eyes at the coronation.”

At those words, my blood went cold. Zeph. Why were they asking about her?

“What’s going on?” Kaela asked, stepping forward.

You all must have been there on the day of the coronation,” the rogue leader continued. “You must have seen how the Lycan King massacred our Alpha. Now we have come for blood. We cannot touch any royal Lycan family members, but we can make the woman he is obsessed with pay for his sins.”

“What!!” I flared up. “Why would you want her to pay for any sins of his? Why…”

“Don’t say it like that,” Zeph’s voice replied.

“Say it like what? You know he came here because of you. He couldn’t take his eyes off you while he was eating.”

“Dessyn…”

“And when he grabbed your waist and kissed you, gods, Apex is so unsettling, but that just makes him hotter. Zephyr, you’re so lucky to have him. Tell me honestly, between him and Nyroth, who do you prefer?”

Silence fell.

I waited, praying she would say something, anything, but the silence that followed shattered me.

I walked away, dazed and hollow. She had kissed him. Her lips, the lips I, her mate, had never claimed.

She had allowed him to kiss her, and I knew damn well he was never gentle. He had always looked at her like she was his next meal. A prey.

And then a darker thought struck me.

What if he had already thrust into her? Sucked her breasts? Left part of himself inside her?

Horror spread through my chest.

Wait, What if she got pregnant by him?

No. I needed to stop it. She is my mate. I had to save her. The only way to do that was to put her in a position where I could be her savior, then she would see who truly deserved her.

I mounted my horse again and galloped toward the tavern on the outskirts of town to meet the rogues… and strike a deal.
