Zephyrine

I have been shocked countless times in my life, but now never to the point where even breathing feels impossible.

I left the Wolf Fortress with a relieved heart, believing that death and war had finally ended. I was ready to tell Lycannar about his pup, to share the joy of the peaceful life I thought awaited us. But seeing this, seeing what stands before me now, I realize how wrong I was. So wrong, and so foolish to think happiness could come without a price, without sacrifice.

Zephyrine, inform my sisters that I’m leaving for the Demon Realm. You must stay back and stay safe.Lycannar’s voice was quiet as he closed the witch’s eyes and carefully laid her body at the riverbank.

Then, without another word, he dove into the water, moving through it effortlessly.

For a few heartstopping seconds, I could only stand there, frozen like a fool, my mind spinning and blank.

Then, everything snapped. The dizziness weighing me down vanished, and power surged through my veins, adrenaline flooding every inch of me.

Without hesitation, I plunged into the water after him. I swam fast, faster than I thought possible, until I caught up to him, just as the portal’s light broke through the depths, blinding and ethereal. I blinked hard, holding my breath, terrified of what awaited beyond.

I told you to stay back.”

The voice came from behind, and I opened my eyes, realizing I was not underwater anymore and before me loomed a massive castle I never knew existed.

The air was different here, thicker, darker. What was once the Demon Realm now burned to ashes. Cries and wails echoed everywhere, chaos unraveling in every corner.

Lycan

He pulled me out of the water, and together we stood at the shore, unable to comprehend the sight before us.

The war that was supposed to descend upon the Lycan Kingdom, the one I had prepared for with my spirit guard, had not come there. It had come here.

Goosebumps prickled my skin as the screams grew louder, the air thick with the stench of blood and fire. Death was everywhere. Armies fallen. The dead uncountable. But by whose hand?

Lycannar slowly took my hand, his face pale for the first time in his life. We walked through the ruins, step by step, until we reached the castle’s main hall.

There, he stopped, his grip on me suddenly cold. He released my hand and pushed the door open.

Against the wall stood a woman, her body pierced by arrows.

Xyrrha.

Lycannar walked in quietly, his heartbeat loud enough for me to hear. For a long while, he just stood before her, his former love, who had clearly fought to her last breath.

A true warrior.

Are you the Lycan King?

The voice came from a cupboard. I froze as little children emerged, their faces blackened with smoke, their small bodies stained with blood.

The woman warrior said you would come to save us,one of the girls sobbed. She said we would know you by the way you carry yourself, like a king.

My chest tightened. Xyrrha had died protecting these children, believing Lycannar would come to save them all.

I could only imagine what he felt, yet in the midst of it, Lycannar knelt before the children, lowering himself to their level.

I am the Lycan King,he said softly, and you will come with me. Alright?

They nodded in unison, tears streaking their faces. Lycannar stood and led them out, and I followed, guiding the youngest ones. We walked through the ruins toward a oncegrand quarter, clearly the royal domain.

Lycannar hesitated at the door, his hand trembling before he finally pushed it open. Inside, an old man with silver hair sat on the bed. Even in his weakened state, his bearing was regal, unmistakably that of the Demon King.

He must have heard us, but he didn’t look up. His gaze was fixed on the lifeless man lying at

his feet.

The moment I saw him, I recognized him instantly. Lycannar’s uncle, Ureh. The one he had once introduced to me as his mother’s brother. He was dead now, as if he’d taken a fatal blow for the king.

Werewolves invaded the Realm, son,the Demon King rasped. They opened the portal, just like five years ago to strike a bargain. You must go to the prison where your brother is kept. See if he still lives. Go now.

Lycannar didn’t hesitate. He turned and bolted from the room.

I followed closely, ushering the children behind me. As we ran through the crumbling halls, more survivors appeared, wounded, burned, broken, but alive. They joined us as we pushed forward until we reached a massive gate.

Snowflakes carpeted the ground. The silence there was unnatural, cold and absolute. A dead guard lay sprawled at the entrance. Lycannar crossed the threshold, moving into the fog with tense shoulders.

You all wait here,he ordered, vanishing into the white haze.

We stood, hearts pounding, until his figure reappeared.

I can’t find my brother,he said, panicked. I can’t

He turned and ran again, searching frantically. When he returned, his voice broke.

I can’t find him. All the prisons are empty. All of them

The prison of the heir is different, Your Majesty,a wounded man spoke from behind me. You must summon him with your energy. Only then will he appear.
