I have relaxed too much, and it has cost me dearly, more than I can afford. It feels as though death itself had spoken through her, and she had given her last wish, for Hades to take care of Young Black if anything ever happened to her.
I can’t brush it off. I still can’t believe it, last night, Luna Tahlia died. Blinking away tears, I stood in the hall, torn between going in or not.
I don’t know the cause of her death, but Kaela’s words echo in my mind. She once said Luna Tahlia wouldn’t have a happy ending, and now it all begins to make sense.
Her death was horrible, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t make light of it. It weighs me down, makes me sick to my stomach, and all I want right now is Lycannar. That’s why I came to this door again.
Chantel wouldn’t let me in, and I kept wondering how to convince him that I needed to see him. I was still standing there when I heard soft footsteps behind me.
Turning slowly, I saw Princess Serena, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She didn’t speak at first, but grief lingered in every line of her face.
“You need to come to the dining hall, Zephyrine. Mearez wants to speak with you,” she said softly.
I bit my lip to hold back the sobs and followed her toward the dining hall. Princess Mearez sat silently in her chair, her expression calm yet broken.
After Luna Tahlia gave up the ghost, Hades had been pale and speechless. It all happened so suddenly that none of us understood what caused it.
When I arrived at the table, I realized Princess Mearez seemed to already know. The hall was silent as Hades entered, his steps slow and heavy, the entire kingdom cloaked in grief that cold afternoon.
He sat down, and the silence deepened, honoring his woman’s passing.
For a long time, no one spoke. Then, brushing away her tears, Princess Mearez looked at Hades and dropped the bombshell.
“Luna Tahlia had a miscarriage, and it led to her death.”

The entire hall froze. None of us could believe what we just heard.

“When one wishes to end a pregnancy,” she continued softly, “there are many potions for it. Some only harm the pup, while others are so strong they take both lives. Luna Tahlia consumed the strongest kind, one her wolf couldn’t fight. She and the pup both perished.”
Silence fell again, heavy and unbearable. My heart thudded painfully.
Luna Tahlia had never told me she was pregnant. She once confessed she’d had a one–night stand with Hades, but never mentioned a child. Which meant…
“She didn’t know,” I whispered, realization crashing over me. “She didn’t know she was carrying Hades‘ pup. She would never have drunk that potion if she knew.”
All eyes turned to me. Hades said nothing, his grief too deep for words. I swallowed hard, a chill crawling up my spine.
“Luna Tahlia didn’t drink any potion, Princess Mearez. She stayed in my pack before coming here. No physician ever attended to her. I would have known.”
