Chapter 341
Zephyrine

Standing in the corridor of the new Black Tower, my eyes roamed the vast courtyard, watching life unfold within life.
Lycans and Demons living side by side without complaint. When I was young, we all wondered what they were like behind their massive, closed
gates.
When I grew older, I heard that Demons were the most frightful creatures one could ever encounter. But now… now I know who the truly dangerous ones are, and who must be peeled from the surface of the living.
He had tricked me into leaving the Alpha seat because he knew that if I didn’t comply willingly, the ritual wouldn’t be completed.
That was why he acted, pretending to repent. And stupid me, believing him, trusting him, opening up. I can bet my life that Varyn didn’t know I carried Lycannar’s pup until I told him. His plan was to rid me of it without my knowledge.
The potion we drank at the Wolf Fortress, the same one poured from a single jar into two cups, was laced with poison meant for abortion.
Unknown to anyone, Luna Tahlia was also pregnant. She drank it too, and because of that, she died, leaving behind a young son who will now grow up without truly knowing his mother.
Shifting my gaze downward, I looked at my spirit guard and swallowed hard.
Every trace of joy, relief, and happiness drained from me. My heart hardened. I thought my task was done, that the war was over, but now I see I was wrong. The war still lingers, one last wave yet to come, and I must act fast before Le Fey vanishes.
Turning toward my bedchamber, I stepped inside, undressed, and pulled on a fitted dress. I changed my shoes, straightened, and exhaled shakily to steady my breath.
Then I turned toward the corner, toward that small armory chamber I knew so well.
Slowly, I walked toward it and opened the door. The armors stood as they always had, Lycannar’s beside mine.
My eyes moved to my sword, the one that had won me countless battles, the one I wielded even against my own kind.

I stepped inside and picked it up, feeling a sharp thrill run down my spine. It hadn’t left me, the call of war, the electric pulse, the hunger for battle.
I had thought I could abandon it all, but how can I when my enemies still breathe?
Gripping my sword, I marched out, only to find Blue waiting in the hallway. She froze when she saw me armed and ready, but before she could speak, I brushed past her, descending the stairs to the dining hall. The princesses were waiting there.
It was as though they had known I would try to leave, to flee.
“Zephyrine, what are you doing?” Princess Serena demanded, stepping in front of me. “What’s going on? You have to stay here, there’s a cure!”
I met her eyes, swallowing the lump of panic in my throat.
“You heard what Princess Mearez said before I revealed everything. She said it’s a deadly strong poison.”
“Zephyrine…”
“First thing,” I cut her off, my voice trembling as sorrow overwhelmed me. I closed my eyes to control it, but when I opened them again, they were already red with tears. “First thing, I beg you, don’t tell Lycannar about the pup. And second, you must tell him I’m done with him. Tell him I cheated or something. Make him hate me so he can move on. Don’t tell him I’m carrying his pup, or that I’m dying with it. He won’t survive that truth. Please.”
I turned to Princess Mearez, who remained silent, her stillness confirming what I already feared, there was no cure.
I wanted to say something more, to confess that Lycannar and his siblings had been the best thing that ever happened to me. But the words died on my tongue, crushed beneath the weight of emotion. I turned away and headed for the exit.
Outside, I walked straight to Le Fey. My spirit guard unfolded its massive wings, sensing my distress.
“Let’s go,” I whispered. “Let’s finish this, Le Fey.”
At my command, he spread his wings wide, sending a gust of wind over me before taking off into the sky.
I turned toward the waiting carriage and climbed inside, only to find Blue seated there, determination burning in her eyes.
