The silence that settled between us was the kind that defeated sound itself, the kind that made the ears ring and the heart pound too loud in its place.
The tension was choking, his gaze so deep it felt like it was melting through my skin.
He waited for an answer, and though he hadn’t spoken, I could tell he already had a dreadful inkling. But he wanted to hear it from me, to erase all doubt.
“Your pup, Lycan. I’m pregnant.”
He froze. His hands slipped from me, falling to his sides. The words hit him like a blade.
He looked at me again, disbelief flickering in his eyes before he stepped back, gaze lowering to my flat stomach, then back to my face. He couldn’t seem to believe what he’d just heard.
He walked to the door, then stopped halfway and turned instead to the bed. He sat down slowly, still staring at me, eyes empty of expectation, mind lost in chaos.
“You are… wait…how long have you been…?” His words faltered. “Dying? I don’t…”
He broke off, swallowing the flood of questions choking him. His dark, silken hair fell forward, shadowing his face.
When he looked up again, his gaze had softened, tender and frightened all at once.
“Come here,” he said gently.
The lump in my throat almost broke me. I tried to stay back, but the pull between us was too strong.
I walked to him, and he reached for me, drawing me down beside him. His hands were steady now, careful as if I would shatter. He brushed the hair from my face, and when his eyes found mine again, I felt like the only woman alive. He worshipped me in that gaze.
“Take a deep breath,” he murmured. “And tell me everything. Please.”
The ache that followed was unbearable. The cruel clash between the sweet future I’d dreamed of and the reality pressing down on me made it hard to breathe.
“Luna Tahlia is dead, Lycan. Did you
you know?”

His expression told me he didn’t, and that alone made my heart pound. I wasn’t sure how he would handle what came next.
“She was… it’s…”
He waited, silent but burning for the truth. I squeezed his hand, meeting his eyes.
“Lycan… my brother… on the day of the ritual of handover, you know Luna Tahlia and I both went together?” He said nothing, just stared. “The potion we drank that day… it wasn’t only at ritual potion. There was an abortion brew in it.”
He went rigid.
I held onto him tightly, my voice trembling. “Luna Tahlia was pregnant too, with your brother’s pup.
The potion was meant for me. It was poured from the same jar, and we both drank it.”
My breath hitched. “It killed her. Princess Mearez said it was too strong, too toxic. Luna Tahlia’s wolf was weak, she couldn’t fight the aftermath. She died while miscarrying.”
His face drained of color.
“I took it too, Lycannar,” I whispered. “And though I’m an Alpha, though I’m a warrior, Princess Mearez saw it. She said my wolf is losing the battle. It’s only a matter of days before she fades.”
“She said she has a cure,” he interrupted, springing up in panic. “Then let’s go to her now. Zephyrine, we have to…”
“Lycan, wait. Listen to me…”
“Don’t ask me to listen,” he cut in, voice low and trembling. His eyes burned into mine. “Your brother… I’m not leaving you with him. And I take back my word of sparing him. I’ll…‘
“Lycan.” I called his name softly, reaching for his hand before the rage could consume him.
He stilled, and I stroked his knuckles, grounding him.
“Varyn is my burden to carry. My cross. I can’t let him go unpunished, but I must be the one to end it. All I want from you is…”
“I can’t give you what you want, Zephyrine.” His voice was raw, desperate. He already knew where I was heading. “Not this time.”
“Lycan..”

“In our bed, in that tower, do you want me to bring another woman there? To touch her where I touched you? Taste her where I have tasted you?”
The thought hit like fire. My heart twisted with jealousy, and I punched his chest hard. But he didn’t stop.
“You know how much I dreamt of pups. Do you want another woman to bear them? To live with me, smile with me, take your place?”
Tears broke free, frustration bubbling over. I punched him again, harder this time, but he didn’t even flinch. Him such a pillar of unwavering strength.
