At first he was adamant, he pushed back so hard I thought he would never relent. He didn’t want me to shoulder all of it alone. But after my pleading, my persistence, something in him softened. He trusted me. At last he nodded.
Fingers still entwined, he led me toward the courtyard. We stopped before the closed gate; I glanced at the guards.
One look from me and the order was carried out without argument. The heavy doors eased open, revealing his powerful horse standing like a statue, waiting for its rider.
He turned to me once more, eyes full of worship and something like relief. He’d heard I left, that I meant to break things off, and yet he’d set all that aside to confront me instead.
He slipped his arms around my waist, ignoring the onlookers and any danger that might be near. He’d handed over the rest of his duties and promised to wait for me until morning.
He drew me into a quiet kiss and my heart swelled at the way he loved me gentle, sure, protective. When he pulled back his thumb lingered on my cheek and he smiled, slow and tender.
“Your best friend’s watching us from the window,” he murmured.
“Let her,” I said. “Let the whole world look. Let them see what we are together, different from what she shared with my brother.”
I stood on tiptoe and kissed Lycannar again. He searched my face as if memorizing me, then took a step back.
“Bring Blue back. Bring yourself back. Bring our pup back alive. Promise me.”
“Okay,” I said, and the word felt like a vow between us.
He walk up, reached for his horse reins, and was rode off through the open gate. Almost at once Jurrek strode from his hall and hurried to catch up, handing Lycannar a folded slip of paper. “You need to know this,”
Jurrek said quietly as Lycannar skimmed the note, then mounted and galloped away.
Jurrek came back to me and pulled me into a tight, shame–filled embrace.

Chapter 345
“I failed you, Zephyr,” he whispered. “I don’t deserve to stand before you.”
He started to walk away toward his hall, but I caught his wrist and held him.

For a long moment I studied his face, waiting. He told me everything without pretense.
“Your brother wanted revenge so badly he lost his aim,” Jurrek said. “Apex’s uncle blurted out a shocking confession after he’d slept with Kaela’s mother. Then he delivered the truth like a verdict. He said Apex is a demon. This made your brother decided. If he cannot kill Apex here in the Lycan kingdom, he will strike at Apex’s real home and lay waste to the Demon Realm. and he used the old priestess from five years ago to open a new portal. He sent a letter to the demon king but the king advisor replied instead. He loved the idea of ruin. Varyn wrought it. By the time I realised, it was already too late.”
Varyn’s voice answered before I could react.
“If you want the information, why don’t you ask me?” he offered, cool and certain. The confidence in him made my skin tighten.
I turned slowly to face him. If this was how he wanted the story to be told, then so be it.
“Jurrek, I heard the war strategist sent some armies home,” I said.
“That was to trick you into making the handover ritual,” Jurrek answered. “The main armies he used to destroy the Demon Realm are camped at the Wolf Fortress.”
A brittle relief ran through me. If the forces were gathered in one place, they could be struck together. The calculus of war sharpened into a terrible opportunity.
I straightened my shoulders and walked up to Varyn, all smile drained from my face. I lowered my voice so only he could hear.
“Tonight I will ride Le Fey over your camps and burn them,” I said. “Tonight I will slaughter the remaining two council members who backed this. What you failed to do as the son of my father, I, the first female Alpha, will do. You can save them while you can. At night I rise; I will destroy every one of them, just as you and they destroyed the Demon Realm.”
