I drifted awake, stirring, and immediately noticed he wasn’t beside me. I fluttered my eyelids open, and darkness swallowed the bedchamber. All the candles had been blown out, leaving only a shadowy silhouette of a creature seated in the center of the room. Lycannar in his Lycan form.

Fear, every being feels it, even the strongest warrior. Yet years of discipline had made me addicted to the rush, and because of it, I didn’t scream.

My eyes trailed down the figure. I couldn’t make out details in the darkness, but I knew it was him. The anklets around his ankles gave him away. Now they glowed faintly, as though keeping him bound.

Gently, I sat up, reaching for a candle, but his voice cut through the silence. It was the beastly sound I had heard only when he lost control.

“Don’t,” he said, and I went cold.

I turned back to him. Even in shadow, I could feel his gaze. He sat on the chair, enormous, unlike any Lycan. I had ever seen. Silence stretched between us, my heart hammering:

“Why are you so… big?” I asked quietly.

He didn’t respond at first. Then, softly, he said,

“I can’t sleep. I can’t tell if you’re real anymore.”

“Lycannar…”

“I grew up in hatred and blood. All my life, my father spat no pleasant words at me, only cruelty until the day he died. He would stand at that doorstep he can’t cross, sneering, and say ‘You will always be alone. You will never find peace. You will never be happy.”

Goosebumps crawled across my skin as I watched his legs shift. The anklets glowed, as if imprisoning him even when he moved.

“I’ve been trapped in this chamber for years, in this kingdom. I believed those words… until I met you, Zephyrine. When I went to the Empire Grove to retrieve the cure flower… I started seeing things. My ugliest memories, voices in my head. His voice, reminding me I would never find peace or happiness. Sometimes he’d be among my people; other times, in my own home. It looked so real I couldn’t tell illusion from truth. I told myself it was the Grove… but now, now I know.”

“Lycan.”

“His voice has always been there, even before I went to the Grove. That place didn’t harm me because I was already doomed. Can a king who has already fallen fall again?”

“Don’t say that,” I whispered, my heart breaking at his bitterness. “Lycan, never say that to yourself.”

Silence returned, broken only by our shared breathing. Finally, he spoke again.

“Staring at your sleeping face… it’s addictive, Zephyrine, and…” He paused, letting out a shaky sigh. “I am

scared.”

“You are a king,” I reminded him softly.

“I will lose my mind if I see him with you again, Zephyrine. I swear to the gods, I will.”

My chest ached, and I pressed against him, lips meeting his as he whispered.

“I know it’s too soon, but can I call you my Queen?”

I pulled back to meet his gaze. His expression was serious, unyielding.

“Can I call you my love too?”

No words came. Instead, he kissed me tenderly, gripping my waist, guiding me to sit on him as he entered me gently.

“You let me know if I get too harsh,” he groaned lowly. I circled my hands around his neck, surrendering to
