Chapter 89
Zephyrine

I couldn’t sleep. No. I just couldn’t rest. I tried to get dressed for bed but found myself standing at the window, staring at the spot where he had left me.
A soft sigh came from behind me, Dessyn’s voice.
“You should go to him, Zephyr. Trust me, you won’t sleep a wink unless you see him and talk to him.”
I lower my gaze and slowly turn to see her sitting on the bed. Blue stood at the door, both worried about
- me.
Today had resulted in something I hadn’t seen coming from a long mile away, and tonight had taken more than I could ever muster. I am only grateful that Moon isn’t home to witness such moments and hear the truth about Nyroth, my own mate condemning me to death.
I wonder what would have happened to me.
“If it wasn’t for Lycannar who came that day, and left in rage, triggered the pain and made it intensify…” I shake my head slowly. “I wouldn’t have known I am dying.”
“Zephyr…”
“If it wasn’t for Princess Mearez… I wouldn’t have even known what cure to use, Dessyn.”
She lowers her gaze in sadness, and I look away to steady my emotions.
“If it wasn’t for all of you who stood by me, if it wasn’t for Lycannar and Moon and Chantel who made that journey and brought back the flower cure… I wouldn’t be here tonight. Hale and healthy.”
I sniff, leaning on the wall, exhausted.
“He knows I am poisoned by Kaela and yet he kept it to himself. He knows she tried to end my life, and yet he abandoned me to rot. I swear to the gods, if Lycannar had been the one who hurt Nyroth, I wouldn’t see him ever again. I told him many times. Despite his rudeness and all, I protected him from the Lycan King. We all know Lycannar will not think twice before ending his life, but I won’t have any of it because Nyroth is my mate!”
I sigh shakily, my heart shattering.
“But he never did feel anything for me. Not even from the onset. Nothing at all. He believes Kaela saved him even after seeing evidence. He believes I am lower to him because I choose to live as a rogue. He chose to leave me for dead because he believes I am useless. I will reject him and make him regret.”
I turn toward the window and peer out when softly, Dessyn walks up and settles her palm on my shoulder.
“You should go to Lycannar tonight. Blue will be safe with me. For you and for him, Zephyr. Go on.”
I lower my gaze at her advice. She is still one of the few people who can see through me, see what I feel.
I want Lycannar so much. So very much that my heart aches. I can’t bear the fact that he is mad at me, and I

I slowly look down at the white, powerful horse he had gifted me, and I sigh. Maybe I should take a ride tonight.
It’s a powerful horse, more like the one I rode into battle five years ago to defeat the demons and send them back to their realm.
I stop in the royal stable and dismount, rubbing her mane for a few seconds as the stableman comes to take her reins.
“My lady,” he greeted, and I bowed in response.
Quietly, I walk into the hall, appearing in the dining hall. It’s empty; silence hangs heavily.
Gently, I head up the stairs and into Lycannar’s chamber, expecting to see him on the bed, but no. He is nowhere to be seen.
I walk out from there and into his bath chamber, but he isn’t there either.
On his shoulder perches the same raven I first saw when I came to the Lycan Kingdom. Powerful, understated dominance.
“Why do you care?” he mutters, and I set my jaw, anger flooding in me.
I dash forward to stand before him.
“Where in the hell are you coming from, Lycannar Blood?”
His eyes are on his kingdom before they shift to mine. I see his jaw set, the anger and jealousy clear.
“Why?” he asks instead. “You scared I might also have gone to a woman?“,
“You won’t dare.”
“Try me.” He challenges, walking into his chamber. I follow, pushing him from behind, but it makes no impact. He is too strong, too formidable.
“I hate you,” I mutter coldly, and he turns to glare.
“Thank goodness you are speaking the truth now. Why are you here if you do hate me?”
“Lycan.”
“I respect you, Zephyrine, and I respect your choices. I won’t hurt your mate because you love him so much, but do not test my patience. Just because I am obsessed with you doesn’t mean I am a second choice you come to when you are bored of your mate…”
I slap him instantly. Hard. His head tilts aside from the impact. I am so mad at him, and yet desperate.
“It’s you I love and you know it!”
Slowly, he looks at me. I glare, but that enmity lasts only a second before everything shatters.
We move at the same time, meeting in the middle, kissing as though it will be the last time.
