We lay on the bed utterly spent, our clothes scattered on the floor, while we remained naked in one another’s arms, still feeling the power of what we had just shared.

I loved it. Everything about being in his arms like this, being pampered by him and cherished. I closed my eyes to savor the quietness when his voice came softly.

“He touch you?”

I waited a few seconds, knowing fully well who he was asking about.

“No.”

“You sat with him?”

“No.”

“You still want him?”

To this I couldn’t respond. Want him? No. Never. I am so certain. I pull away from Lycannar to sit up. He watches me run my fingers through my hair and then reach for my gown.

“I have to go,” I said, aiming to dress, but he reaches for my wrist and pulls me back down to him. My heart swells at his tender touch and I sigh shakily.

“My love…”

“Stay tonight,” he requests softly, his palm caressing my arm once again, soothing me. “Please.”

Gently, I look up to stare at him and lean down to kiss his lips. We had argued, and yet it led to something splendid.

“I’m famished, Lycannar,” I say. “I haven’t eaten anything today.”

To this, he smiles. As though he can’t help it. He rolls me over to kiss my lips, my head resting on the pillow.

“Let me make a dinner for you. Supper, in fact. Since it’s so late.”

My eyes go wide in awe and admiration.

“You can cook?”

He raises an eyebrow.

“I have been here alone for years. I am only just allowing maids to ascend the stairs. Of course I can cook.” He pulls away to reach for his royal robe but pauses to turn to me. “But… I don’t know. It might not be up to your taste.”

“Since the cook is up to my taste, I am sure his cooking will be.” I say flirtatiously, my eyes shifting to his length and he chuckles quietly at what I mean.

The pleasant sound floods me with immense joy, and for a heart–stopping second, I watch him dress with at smile on his face. Quietly, he walks out, leaving me to deal with the cold and awe of how beautiful he is when he smiles. How utterly gorgeous a man can be.

I have heard horrible rumors about him, but getting to know him deeply, I see he is nothing like the monster the empire portrays him to be.

Slowly, I get up from where I sit and walk toward his numerous identical clothes, about to pick one when I hear a creak ahead, from the corner of the wall.

I turn toward it, curiosity piqued. Gently, I make my way toward it, and again the creak sounds. It’s behind. the books. I reach to search, but then it flies out, startling me sharply.

I take a step back to see it. A raven. Perching on the table, eyes sharp and fixed on me. I sigh shakily, relief flooding me. It’s not something unusual. I’ve seen Lycannar’s raven a few times before.

“You want one too?” a croak comes from behind, and I go cold.”

I whirl around sharply.

What?!

“I have a brother. You want him?” the raven asks again, and my knees go weak. I slowly approach it, palm extended in curiosity, and it settles gently on it.

Carefully, I hold it to my face to examine it in wonder

“You can talk?”

“Yes.

“My gods. How come? How can you? Did Lycannar know?”

The raven flutters her feathers.

“One question at a time. My Majesty knows I can speak.”

“Wow. But…” I was saying when Lycannar’s sudden appearance stops me.

He appears with two plates of roasted meats but pauses when he sees me with his raven, then walks into the chamber and places the plates on the table.

The raven flies off my palm to perch on his shoulder, settling as though it has always belonged there.

I can’t shake it off. I watch him quietly and nod at last.

Silence falls after his words, and I grow more confused. It’s not adding up.

“Lycannar,” I call quietly. “Your father is the one who said bitter words to you. Is he also the one who gifted you companions so you wouldn’t be lonely?”

“No.” He whispers, and I wait, curious. “I have a stepfather. Two, actually. One is the father of my brother Hades, and the other is the father of my elder sisters Mearez and Serena. I call all of them father, but it was Hades‘ father who gave me Chantel and Ravana.”

I pause from chewing, the fork slipping from my fingers as I stare at him in awe.

“Wait… does… does that mean Princess Mearez and Princess Serena are not really true blood? You are the real and only offspring from the late Lycan King?”

He nods gently.

“My sisters are true princesses too, in a way. They are born from the true Queen of this kingdom, only from a different father. My own father also gave me birth from a different mother. My own mother already had my brother Hades with her lawfully wedded husband before she begot me with my father.”

“No one knows except family members, and we plan on keeping it that way,” he says, and I swallow hard at what he means. Did he consider me a family member too?

“In any case, we all don’t care about it. My brother Hades loves us all. He’s the eldest. Mearez came next, then Serena, and lastly me. We love one another… too much.”

“I know that already,” I whisper quietly. “I have seen the bond. I know how much you all love one another. About your older brother though, I don’t really know him that much.”

“You will know him soon,” he says lazily, then looks down at the plate. Slowly, I follow his gaze, only to be stunned. I have eaten my portion and his as well.

Slowly, he looks right into my eyes, and I swallow.

“Goodness. I… well, Your Majesty, I have to admit… your supper is very great,” I admit jokingly, and he leans back in his chair, chuckling into the night.
