“You’re cursing my son’s death?” Helen’s voice trembled with rage. Leif was her only child—her Achilles’ heel—and she lunged at Lindsay, ready to strike.
But Horace was quicker. Before Helen’s hand could even touch Lindsay, Horace’s foot shot out, sending Helen sprawling hard onto the floor. Pain shot through her arm as her elbow scraped against the hardwood, blood welling in tiny beads. She gritted her teeth, tears springing to her eyes from the sting.
Horace crouched down, his hand clamping tightly on Helen’s shoulder. His eyes were cold, almost murderous. “Apologize, or get beaten to death. Pick one.”
Helen met his gaze and felt a chill lance through her. Her scalp prickled. She didn’t need to think twice.
“S-sorry. I shouldn’t have said those things. I was out of line.”
Her pride was a small price for her life. She saw real intent to kill in this boy’s eyes. If she refused, he just might do it.
His life meant nothing, but hers? She still had plenty of good years ahead.
“Ms. Nelson, you hear that?” Horace turned to Lindsay.
Lindsay nodded. “Great. Now about the damages to my reputation—let’s settle it. We’re family, so I’ll give you a discount. Just wire me eighty-eight thousand.” She flashed Helen her phone with the payment screen ready.
Helen’s heart bled, but she gritted her teeth and paid up. When her husband and son got back from their business trip, she’d make sure to get it all back from Lindsay, with interest.
Once the money was transferred, Lindsay led Horace to Mr. Quigley’s bedroom.
She introduced him. “Mr. Quigley, this is Horace. I’ve just hired him as a caregiver, and he’ll be staying on the fourth floor to help look after Yves.”
Lindsay didn’t bother clearing up the rumors; the facts spoke for themselves.
“Good evening, Mr. Quigley,” Horace said, calm and composed, his expression serious.
Mr. Quigley nodded in approval. “Very well. Take good care of Yves. I’ll make sure you’re rewarded.”
