But Lindsay simply raised her arm higher, holding the phone just out of Naomi’s reach. Naomi was petite—barely over five foot three—while Lindsay, at nearly five foot nine, towered over her.
Naomi’s face turned beet red with fury. Even if she jumped, she couldn’t snatch the phone back. If Lester hadn’t been standing there, she might have cursed Lindsay out right then.
Lester took in the scene, then calmly reached over and took the phone from Lindsay.
Naomi was on the verge of tears, clutching Lester’s arm desperately, her eyes pleading. “Don’t look.”
“Why shouldn’t he?” Lindsay scoffed. “How else will he know the kind of texts I got from you—telling me to drop dead?”
Naomi shot Lindsay a murderous glare. As if stealing her man wasn’t enough, now Lindsay was determined to humiliate her in front of Lester.
Lindsay tilted her head and offered Naomi a sly, mocking smile. Angry, aren’t you? This is just the beginning.
Lester ended up reading the messages anyway. As his eyes scanned the screen, his expression darkened by degrees, cycling between shock and fury.
The texts were all from Naomi—vicious, cruel insults—while Lindsay’s replies had been calm and unremarkable.
“Lester, please, let me explain. I only said those things because I was upset,” Naomi sobbed, switching seamlessly into her damsel-in-distress routine, her tears glimmering.
She was naturally delicate and pretty; crying made her look like a fragile porcelain doll, heartbreakingly pitiful. Lester’s chest tightened just looking at her.
“I know Mr. Quigley Sr. plans to announce the engagement tonight. You’re the best the Quigley family has, and I know Ms. Nelson will choose you. I just lost my head for a moment.”
Lindsay’s brows knit together in confusion. Even if Lester really was the best, how could Naomi be so sure Ms. Nelson would choose him?
