Chapter 542 The Selection
“Stop him!”
Ava and the others shouted urgently.
“Don’t let him get away!”
They rushed forward, grabbing at the big guy and snatching the pot away from him.

Seeing that his pot was being taken from him, the big guy immediately burst into loud, wailing
sobs.
“Leader, that’s Asher Hershberge, Herman’s grandson. But he’s not right in the head.”
Theresa glanced in that direction. Asher was bawling loudly and rolling around on the ground, fighting for the pot. “It’s alright. Just give him the pot.”
Ava and the others reluctantly relinquished their hold on the pot at Theresa’s order, but they continued to stare longingly at the delicious pot of food that they had just lost.
Honestly speaking, there was nothing they could have done differently. The stew had been ruined anyway. Asher had dumped his leftovers, which included various half–gnawed fish bones and vegetable stems, into the pot.
The contents of the pot had turned absolutely disgusting–it was enough to make anybody gag.
Asher was thrilled to obtain the pot. Holding the pot tightly, he turned toward Theresa with a huge, goofy grin. Then, he quickly ran off with the pot.
“Grandpa! Food!”
Herman was busy turning over some mud bricks when he heard his grandson calling out to him. Turning around, he was astonished to see Asher carrying a large pot of stew.
He frowned. “Where did you get that?”
“P–Pretty lady gave.”
He immediately realized that the pot had come from Theresa. After all, she was the only person who would have something like that.
“Give it back!”
“No!” Asher yelled, clutching at the pot tightly.

“Give it back! It’s not yours!”
Clinging to the pot, he plopped himself on the ground and threw a fit. “No!”

“Do you even know what this is?” Herman tried to snatch the pot away but failed. “You can’t just take other people’s things! How are you going to pay them back?!”
Asher hugged the pot tighter and petulantly said, “Yummy.”
“Fine, just eat it.”
Herman sighed, defeated by his grandson’s stubbornness. He turned away and went back to working on the mud bricks.
A steaming ladle of fragrant soup suddenly appeared in front of him. Asher had shared some of the stew with him.
“Eat, Grandpa.” Asher grinned, looking silly but happy. “Yummy. Eat.”
Herman’s usually cold and jaded gaze faltered slightly; his eyes had suddenly filled with tears. “You foolish child…”
When evening came, Theresa and her team rolled out their sleeping bags and prepared to sleep under the night sky illuminated by the bright moon.
All of a sudden, someone walked over carrying a pot.
Theresa opened her eyes at the sound of footsteps. Glancing over, she immediately spotted Herman’s figure in the shadows.
Herman had stopped about ten feet away from where they were sleeping. Sensing Theresa’s gaze on him, he set the clean pot on the ground and turned around to leave.
He left behind a cryptic warning before he left.
“You’d better leave soon. The people in the inner camp aren’t normal. If they find out there are outsiders who don’t belong here, they’ll kill you without mercy.”
Blinking in surprise at the unexpected warning, she watched his thin and hunched figure disappear into the night.
Morning came in the blink of an eye.
The entire camp, hidden away in the canyon, was bustling with activity.
The residents of the outer camp had washed and cleaned themselves the day before. They had worn their cleanest clothes just for today, trying to look as presentable as possible for the

Theresa’s group had grown significantly since the previous day. After all, those who shared her food last night had joined her side.
She asked, “Are you going to participate in the selection later?”
“What for? We’re coming with you!” Ava replied.
Theresa nodded. “Lara, Lachlan–you two lead them out later.”
There was no cell signal in the camp, so they couldn’t call for transport.
Fortunately, the zombies outside had been cleared away. It should be safe enough for them to walk outside on foot.
Lara and Lachlan answered immediately, “Yes, Theresa!”
At that moment, the gates of the inner camp swung open. A massive crowd instantly rushed toward the entrance, fighting for a spot in front.
Theresa noticed the group from yesterday coming out of the gates, so she headed in the same direction.
