Andrew’s retreat gave Liam the false impression that he had done something meaningful for Tracy. For the first time, he felt a spark of courage to face her.
But when Tracy looked at him–standing there with the expression of “I did this all for you“– her stomach turned.
Her brows furrowed as she said flatly, without hiding her disgust, “Mr. Liam, this gestures of yours don’t mean anything to me.”
Liam froze, his face stiffening in confusion.
He had broken ties with his family for her. He had chosen to rely on Norris instead of bowing his head back home. And yet, all of that was his own self–indulgent sentiment.
Liam doesn’t get it, but the joy he had felt, the pride of finally doing something for Tracy, collapsed in an instant.
The weight of it pressed on him so heavily that he drove home in a daze, nearly colliding with other cars several times along the
way.
When Norris saw him return in such a distracted state, concern creased his face. “What happened?” he asked.
He knew Liam had been obsessing over Tracy every single day. Judging by his current state, it had to be related to her.
Sure enough, Liam muttered in confusion, “Norris, I confronted Andrew for her. Did I … did I do the wrong thing?”
Norris wasn’t sure what had happened, but he knew Liam’s heart was in the right place. “You only wanted to help her. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
But Liam wasn’t convinced. Growing up together, he knew how to read Norris too well–he could see the flicker of doubt hiding in his eyes.
His grip tightened on Norris’s arm, his voice trembling. “Tell me the truth. Did I really mess up again?”
He was terrified.
Liam had already made years of mistakes and already hurt Tracy too many times.

The thought of failing her again terrified him.

Norris took it all in. He stayed quiet for a long while, then sighed, “Tracy owns just as many shares as Andrew. On top of that, the projects she’s running are bringing in clear profits. If Andrew did call a shareholder meeting, no one’s going to vote her out as Deputy CEO.”
Liam’s heart sank. What he thought was a bold stand for her had been pointless.
Worse, his actions had only made the Jackmans—already under public scrutiny–look like fools.
He didn’t need Norris to spell out the rest; Liam had been nurtured by his family for years. He knew exactly what Norris meant.
His strength left him, and he let go of Norris’s arm.
Having grown up as close as brothers–and with him being an only child–Norris had always treated Liam like family.
Seeing him like this hurt more than he wanted to admit.
He was about to say something to comfort him when Liam grabbed his arm again. “Norris, you said you’d help me find out what Tracy went through at the academy. Have you learned anything? What happened to her? I know I was wrong. I want to make it right–I want her to forgive me.”
Norris hesitated at the request.
Matthew had once offered to get him into the academy, but only if he showed the proper sincerity. Norris had been waiting for Matthew to name his price.
But the man never brought it up again, as if he’d forgotten.
Norris had considered waiting longer. But looking at Liam now–consumed, desperate, almost obsessed–he decided to act.
If it meant paying more to prove his sincerity, so be it.
So he went to Matthew directly. He offered to give up several of his projects in exchange for access to the academy and the truth about Tracy’s past. Matthew only laughed.
It wasn’t his usual polite smile. He laughed so hard that his usual gentlemanly mask broke apart, something Norris had never seen from him before.
A chill of unease ran through Norris. “Mr. Renault,” he asked carefully, “what’s so funny?”
