When I finally regained feeling in my legs, I pushed myself off Gianna, staggering like I was drunk to the door. Maybe I was intoxicated; drunk on misery. Anything was possible at this point in my life.
I reached the door, about to open it, but then hands grabbed me, pulling me away from the door.
“Deep breaths, Bella,” Gianna whispered, holding me tight. “Deep breaths. You don’t want to go out in this state. All eyes will be on you. All lips will whisper bullshit as you pass. They’ve always been wary of you, and now they will see this as an opportunity to badmouth you and try to take you down. So, deep breaths.”
I did as she said, inhaling and holding it for a few seconds before I exhaled softly.
“Good. Keep that up. You’ll keep your head high, Belladonna. Do you hear me?”
I nodded, inhaling and exhaling.
“You won’t let them see any weakness. You won’t give them something to whisper about. You’re Belladonna Varkas, you keep your head high and your shoulders squared. You won’t falter now when you’ve come so far.”
I nodded, my shoulders finally relaxing and my head clearing. Gianna let go of me, stepping back, but I didn’t immediately open the door, I just turned to her.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
She just nodded, and I turned to the door.
I opened it, ready to face the world and its harsh whispers. When my door was closed and I was in my office, it felt like the world outside was buzzing and busy, but as soon as I stepped out, everything fell silent, and all eyes followed me as I walked towards the elevator.
Gianna was right; they were whispering.
“Did you hear? Her signature was on it.”
“How could she? A military contract? She just signed her death certificate.”
“Maybe her father’s legacy isn’t as clean as they claim.”
That was when I faltered, but Gianna was behind me, offering comfort without coming close. “Head high, Belladonna.”
I kept walking until I got to the elevator, holding my shoulders squared and trying as hard as possible not to slam my fist into those bastards who dared talk trash about my father and his legacy. I didn’t look at any of them, I just stared straight ahead.
Finally, we got into the elevator, and when the door closed, my shoulders dropped, and my legs almost gave out, but I held on, leaning my weight on the wall.
“You did good,” Gianna praised, and I just nodded. “Now, we’re going to see Medea, and she always knows

where to push and press, but you must maintain your cool, Belladonna. No matter what she says. Don’t lose your cool. Your position in the company, and even in society, is hanging on by a thin thread. You’ve worked so hard, so don’t let everything be in vain. Even the military is watching. One wrong move, one move, Belladonna, and it’s all over.”
“I won’t slip,” I replied, my voice hard. “I’ve come too far.”
“Good.”
The elevator opened on the fifth floor, and as soon as we stepped out, everything fell silent.
I kept my head high as I headed towards Medea’s office. I didn’t bother to knock as I barged in, throwing the door open.
Her head snapped up as soon as I entered, annoyance evident in her face but when she saw me, that annoyance cleared and was replaced by a smile.
There was someone in her office but she dismissed him immediately, turning to me and resting her elbows on the desk, placing her chin on top of her folded fists.
“Well, what a pleasant surprise this is,” she purred, her twisted smile in place.
I walked towards her desk, planting my palms on her desk and leaning forward. “You’ve gone too far, Medea.”
She simply raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
I tried hard not to bare my teeth at her. “What were you thinking, you fool? Whatever this is that you’re doing is between us. The reputation of our company is at risk here, and you’re also working here. Do you even use that brain that God has blessed you with?”
“I don’t really care about all that,” she answered. “What I care about is taking you down. I don’t care if my position is threatened.”
I leaned in closer until our faces were close. “Tell me, Medea. I’ve dropped my pride, so tell me, what is your deal?”
“It’s because you’re arrogant,” she answered, her smile dropping and her expression one of hate, but there was an odd look in her eyes, something that looked like pain. “You don’t know what you have, Belladonna. You have a father who loves you, a huge roof over your head, and your future already set in stone. I didn’t have the privilege. I was raised in the streets, Belladonna. I had my life taken away from me so young. So when I came into your home, I felt so lucky and I was ready to love you, but then I saw how you acted like a brat and I felt jealous and pained, and miserable. And so since then, I decided that I would give you a taste of what I went through. I would make you feel what it feels like to have everything taken away from you and be left with nothing. And before I knew it, it consumed it, filled me, and it became all I thought about day and night. I loved your father, Belladonna. But when that goal filled me, all my love for him fell. So you caused this. You. You’re the reason I’m this way.”
Belladonna. Belladonna. Belladonna. Fucking Belladonna!
