I laughed so hard that my body shook, my stomach tightened, but my eyes still stung, and a huge lump formed in my throat.
The smile instantly dropped from my face, and I looked back at Medea to see her jaw clenched.
“Are you listening to yourself, Medea?” I asked, my voice low but hard. “Huh? Do you even know the rubbish you’re spitting? You’re doing all this because I was arrogant and rubbed it in your face? How? When you came into my life, I was mourning my mother! And I was slowly losing my father. And you say I was being arrogant?”
She rose from her seat slowly, planting her hands on the desk and getting close to my face, her teeth bared. “When I came into your house, you looked at me like I was nothing! You looked down at me from your high horse like I meant nothing.”
“That’s because you meant nothing!” I shouted into her face, but she didn’t even flinch. “You were nothing to me because I didn’t even know you. Because you came and took my mother’s place when her body hadn’t turned to bones yet. Did you expect me to welcome you with open arms? Did you expect me to smile and hug you, thanking you for taking her place? I didn’t hate you, then, Medea. But I didn’t love you either. So I looked at you like you were nothing because I felt nothing for you. I don’t know about this shit about my high horse or looking down at you. So you made all that up by yourself. Your insecurities made you see all that. You ruined my life because of your stupid insecurities.”
“I haven’t ruined your life,” she snarled, but her voice shook. “Not yet. Your life will only be considered ruined when you have nothing to your name.”
“So this is how you’re going to play it? Harming others to get what you want? Ruining the company?”
She stared at me before she looked behind me, her expression flat before a twisted smile curled her lips. I looked behind me, but it was just Gianna standing there. Gianna with her expression hard, and jaw clenched.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Belladonna.” I looked back at Medea, an eyebrow raised. “I will never do anything to ruin this company.”
I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “Oh, cut that bullshit. You’ll do everything as long as it involves me.”
“But I won’t go as far as to ruin the company.”
I stared at her with a blank expression, rage slowly building up and making my body heat up. I leaned in until I could feel her breath on my cheeks. “What about my father? This is his company too. His position will also be threatened. He could lose everything. Does that not bother you, Medea?”
“It doesn’t,” she answered without hesitation, her voice devoid of any emotion. “Not even one bit. He deserves it for raising a brat like you.”
That rage boiled hotter in me until I felt dizzy with it. I wanted to wrap my arms around her neck and cut off her airflow. I wanted… I wanted to do a lot of things. I wanted to cause her pain. But… but I couldn’t do that. That wasn’t who I was. I couldn’t resort to violence.
I leaned back, getting away from her space. She wasn’t worth it. I should be thinking about how I was going to

handle the meeting with the military, how I was going to clear my name. I shouldn’t be here exchanging words with her. Nothing good was going to come out of it.
I was just about to turn and leave, but then she pushed the button that burned.
“Your mother will probably-”
My hand shot out before I could even think, about to land a harsh slap on her stupid face, but then my hand was caught, and I was dragged back, pressed to a hard chest.
“What-” I looked back but my words died down. His hard body was pressed against my back, and his scent surrounded me like a cloud, filling my head and dulling everything. “Kade.”
But he didn’t look at me, just kept his eyes fixed ahead, a murderous look in his eyes, and I looked away from him to see him fixing that look on Medea.
She stood still, but her body was frozen, her eyes wide.
“You’ve gone too far, Medea,” he growled, and I felt his words vibrating in his chest. I looked back at him, looking up at his hardened expression. That look on his face would make a brown man piss himself. “Seeing as you’ve gotten away with everything you’ve done, you think you can do anything? You think wrong, Medea. This time, you’re juggling too many knives. You’re going to regret this.”
“But I’m going to get what I want before I do,” was Medea’s response, but I didn’t even bother to look at her. It was hard to look away from Kade when he was this way.
His expression changed, a chilling smile curling his lips. “Yeah? And I assume what you want is me?”
“You assume right.”
My head snapped to Medea, my mouth opening and I was about to say something really harsh, but Kade squeezed my hand and I clasped my mouth shut.
“Your confidence is something,” he said, his voice light, but still cold. “But it’s not going to get you anything. Whatever your end game is, or whatever it is that you want from me, you’re not going to get either.”
“We’ll see.”
“Indeed, we will see.”
With my hand that he was still holding, he dragged me out of the office, and I followed, walking behind him, and I just stared at his broad back, unable to say a single word.
He was really here. Right? It wasn’t just my imagination? This is the first time I’ve seen him in weeks, and I didn’t even know what to say or do. My brain just went blank at the sight of him.
And he… he hasn’t even looked at me.
We got into the elevator–Gianna included—and he still didn’t look at me even as I stared daggers into the side of his face,
