Papa’s eyebrows were furrowed at first, confusion plain on his face, but when he realized what I was trying to say, eyes widened, but he quickly regained his composure. He raised an eyebrow, the look on his face saying, “Got any evidence?”

I just shrugged and his second eyebrow joined the first. I looked away from him, focusing on the chaos that was taking place in the room.

I already told him who was responsible for this mess. It was up to him to believe it or not, but I knew I would find evidence. And I also knew that when I do, I’m kicking Medea out of this company, with or without his consent. If he still wants to hold on to her after this, then… Well, there was nothing I could say to that, but it wasn’t going to change anything.

I looked at Colonel Raines to see him already looking at me, his eyebrows furrowed. Now that I was really looking at him, I could see that he was really good–looking, with sand–pepper hair, a beard that was well trimmed, and a bulky physique.

A throat was cleared and the room fell silent, and my attention moved back to Raines, my expression pleasant, but underneath the table, my hands were folded together, wet with sweat. Not because of Raines‘ penetrating gaze, or this whole mess, but because Kade had looked into my eyes.

God, I was a goner.

“Mrs. Varkas,” Raines called, his voice cool. “Do you have any evidence to back up your claim?”

I shook my head. “I don’t, but I will.”

His gaze grew frustrated. “Since there’s no evidence, the blame will be on you.”

My chest tightened, but I nodded. “I will shoulder the blame for now since this happened under my supervision. It was my fault for not being able to keep a tight lid on things. But I won’t take the fall, Colonel. The real culprit will be the one who does.”

Raines held my gaze before he nodded. “You have a week, Mrs. Varkas. That’s all I can give you. When that time passes and nothing comes out, I won’t be the one on your neck, and they won’t be as patient as I am.”

I nodded. “Understood, Colonel. Thank you for your patience. One way or another, you’ll get your weapons back.”

“Good,” he said, picking up his hat and nodding to the room. “Until then.”

The few people he came with also rose, all turning to leave, but just before Raines passed through the door, he turned back and looked at me, an odd look in his eyes.

It was just our executives left in the room and they were arguing about something, their voices overlapping one another, and one of them asked, “What are we going to do now?”

That was when I had had enough. I slammed my hands on the table, rising to my feet, and a hush fell over the

room.

I looked around, at each person, before I spoke. “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?” They appeared taken aback, but they said nothing, and just let me speak. “You think Medea is a better candidate than I am? I was born into this company, damn it! Its legacy is in my blood, and you old men stab me in the back and take an outsider’s back?”

There were whispers among themselves, some looking genuinely confused while the rest looked… sheepish.

I looked over at Gianna, hoping she was taking notes and she nodded.

“Our company’s reputation has been stained,” I continued, looking back at the men. “A footprint has been imprinted on our snow white reputation and it’s not going to come off. But I will do my best to clear this mess and get our name back. But know this; those who were involved in this mess will lose every single thing they have in this company.”

The whispers increased and I looked around, searching for the ones who were really involved and I caught them one by one. These old men weren’t as smart as they thought they were.

“This meeting is adjourned.”

I sat back down, and the men stood up, getting out one by one, muttering as they went.

When they all left, I slumped in my seat, rubbing my face and exhaling. “Fuck, that was nerve–racking.”

“You did good,” Papa praised, and I raised my head and looked at him.

I had almost forgotten he was in the room. It was just Kade, Gianna, and him left.

“That wouldn’t mean anything if we’re not able to catch those involved,” I said, my voice coming harsher than

it was meant to.
