While feeling left out and like a complete fool, and while I asked that question, I was looking at Kade, expecting him to at least spare me a single glance, but he didn’t, and Gianna answered.

“I thought Medea would admit to her crimes,” Gianna said, her voice bitter, and I finally managed to peel my eyes off Kade and look at Gianna. “But she didn’t say anything that would help us. All she did was run her mouth. And somehow, she knew I was recording the conversation.”

“But we didn’t think she would go this far,” Gianna mumbled.

I nodded. “She caught us off guard. But… but how did she manage to pull this off? She couldn’t have done this alone.”

“I’m sure she’s working with the executives,” Gianna confirmed the same thing I’ve been thinking.

My hands curled into fists, my nails digging into my palms. “Those old fools. Maybe it’s high time young people took their place.”

“We’re going to the meeting now,” Gianna informed me and my chest clenched. Shit, I wasn’t ready to face those people. “Your father would be there as well. But there’s not much he can do.”

“I know that.” There was nothing he could do because he couldn’t pick sides. If he took my side without any evidence, that would only make the situation worse, because then they would think we were in this together.

A random thought popped into my head out of nowhere, and I slowly turned to Kade. “Medea said she wants what you have.”

He turned to me with an eyebrow raised, finally looking at me. “What do I have?”

I stared at him. “Who knows? She says you’re not normal. Said something about your entire family not being ordinary. Something about power.”

He continued to stare at me with his eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but then the confusion cleared, and he cursed. “How the fuck did she know?”

I tilted my head at him. “Know what?”

I nodded slowly, very slowly as the wheels in my head turned. Kade healed faster than your average human, he has this… rut thing where his dick swells and… knot? Yeah, I think he called it a knot. And he has also said he wasn’t human.

I was still nodding as I asked, “So what you have is contagious?”

“Contagious?” Gianna gasped and I looked over to see her shifting away from Kade.

“It’s not contagious,” Kade said, and I could hear him rolling his eyes. “You’ve come in contact with me many times, haven’t you?”

I turned to him. “So how can she have what she wants if it’s not contagious?”

He rubbed his nape. “It’s… complicated.”

I stared at him. I was so invested in trying to figure out what he was and what Medea wanted that it skipped my mind that we were having a normal chat, and there weren’t any hard feelings between us. It almost felt like this past month didn’t happen.

He seemed to realize the same thing and he looked at me with his jaw clenched before he looked away. I looked forward as well, a tight knot in my chest, but I felt strangely… warm.

I talked to Kade today. I had felt his warmth today when he pressed me against his chest. I had felt his heartbeat, his scent had surrounded me, and even now I could smell him on me.

I fought the urge to smile, but I failed. A small smile twisted my lips. I felt his gaze on me and I raised my head. Our eyes met and… held. He looked at me without any of those hostile feelings, but he looked away too

I didn’t want to keep staring at him like a creep so I looked away too, but that warmth in my chest expanded.

I suddenly felt like I could do anything, and I felt like I could face the military and clear my name–or try to.

The elevator door opened, and I took a deep breath before I stepped out, Kade and Gianna following behind
