I had a one–night stand with a colonel? Wow, I really needed to self–reflect on my past.
I never remembered those with whom I had a one–night stand, because we did things when I was drowning in alcohol, and we always had sex in the dark. Also, I made sure to drill into their heads that they must be gone before morning.
And right now hearing that I had sex with this man standing in front of me makes me want to melt from embarrassment.
“But…” I stammered, my face burning bright red. “But you’re a colonel!”
Great job, brain. Great job embarrassing us even further.
He scoffed. “You think a colonel doesn’t have sex? We have lots, actually. To relieve stress and all that.”
My face burned hotter. Can the ground just open up and save me from this moment? “I–I see.”
“I heard you’re married now,” he said while looking down at my ring finger, that odd look returning to his
eyes.
“I am,” I answered even though it wasn’t a question.
His lips turned down. “What a shame.”
I blinked in surprise. “Excuse me?”
“Don’t take it the wrong way, Mrs. Varkas. I was just trying to say that things like marriage shouldn’t hold down a woman like you. You shouldn’t allow your wings to be clipped.”
“What the fuck do you know?” I snarled, all embarrassment forgotten. “Huh? I got married? And so what? What made you think you could talk to me like that?”
He raised his hands, backing down. “Whoa, easy. I didn’t mean to upset you. I just… I looked for you after that night.”
I raised an eyebrow, tilting my head. “And why’s that?”
He stared at me, his hands still raised before he shook his head. “It’s nothing to bother you with. It’s just mere greed.”
This wouldn’t be the first time that these men would always think they could have a second time with me. It wouldn’t be the second time either. But they will always get the same reply.
“Good thing you acknowledge your greed,” I said, my voice cold, colder than I thought I was capable of. Maybe Kade was rubbing off on me. “And since you know I’m married, you can’t hold on to any fantasy.”
He just stared at me and then he shrugged–shrugged!

I brushed past him, making my way to the cafe, my mood ruined. “Have a nice day, Colonel. Let’s never see each other again unless it’s for business.”
“I can’t make promises,” was his response.
I didn’t look back and just kept walking, a frown between my brows.
“I can’t make promises.”
What the fuck was that supposed to mean? But I pushed that to the back of my head as I entered the cafe. It didn’t matter what he meant–he didn’t matter–all that mattered was getting Kade his coffee.
I entered the cafe and was out in a second, my mood completely changing now that I was going to see Kade. I’ve always wanted to go see him at this office, but back then I didn’t have time, and then we had that issue and I couldn’t go see him no matter how much I wanted to. But now that I knew that he wasn’t angry at me anymore, I could go see him.
We couldn’t go back to the way things were, but I could still try to be a… friend to him. We couldn’t do this life alone, and even though Kade might not be human–though, I still don’t know what he was–he still had human feelings, so he shouldn’t be alone. His family wasn’t here, so I was going to try and be there for him.
Just that thought alone added a bounce to my steps, and a smile to my face as I went back to the company. Even the stares and whispers of those around me did nothing to dim my good mood.
I got into the elevator and it took me up to the sixth floor, the coffee in hand and the smile still on my face.
I was going to show Kade, and myself, that I could stay without sex, that I didn’t see him as just my sex partner. I saw him more than that, though I couldn’t sort out what I was feeling. I couldn’t put a name to them yet, but I know one day I will. I know one day I will finally be able to open my heart again and let him in. I would finally be able to let Luca go.
But for now… for now, I would try to mend those cracks in me so I could be… perfect for him. Kade Varkas deserved nothing but perfection.
The elevator opened on the sixth floor and I stepped out, not bothered by how everywhere fell silent or how all eyes turned to me. But instead, I just stared ahead, at Kade’s office. That was my goal, and everything else didn’t matter.
“Uhm… ma’am?”
I didn’t answer and just continued walking ahead.
“Ma’am?”
I groaned and stopped walking, turning to face Kade’s assistant. “Yes?”
“Mr. Varkas isn’t in his office, ma’am,” she said, and I frowned, my good mood immediately taking a hit.
“Where is he, then?”
She hesitated, looking away from me. “I’m sorry, ma’am, but I can’t tell you that.”
