My head snapped up and my mouth dropped open. “Colonel?”

Raines nodded and that only made me panic more.

I just spilled coffee on a colonel! Is this a crime? Was I going to get fined?

“Calm down,” Raines said softly, gently taking the handkerchief from me and dabbing his shirt. “You’re not going to get fined.”

I scoffed awkwardly. “Someone has asked that question after a mistake, right?”

His upper lip lifted in a small smile and he didn’t look so scary anymore. “You’ll be shocked by how many times it has happened.”

I couldn’t help but once again notice that… odd look in his eyes. You didn’t look at a stranger like that. I’ve spent enough time with men to know that look meant something, but what it was, I couldn’t figure out.

“Have we met before, Colonel?” I asked.

“Please, just Raines,” he corrected, looking away from me and pointing at himself. “No uniform today. It’s my day off.”

I nodded. “So, Raines, have we met before?”

He scoffed. “You really don’t remember, do you?”

I tilted my head, racking my brain and trying to remember his face. He had an unforgotten face and even if I couldn’t recall his face, his frame should at least be familiar. “I’m sorry, I don’t.”

“Of course you don’t. You were swimming in alcohol that night.”

I blinked very slowly.

Alcohol. Night. And a face I didn’t remember.

I shook my head. “Oh no.”

Raines nodded. “Yes. What you just realized is what happened.”

Oh noooo.

I had a one–night stand with Raines?!

It was the day after, and yet I could still feel his warmth and scent lingering on my skin. I had been reluctant to take a shower, because I didn’t want his scent to fade from me.

Yesterday, even though I didn’t go home and slept in the office, I had a good night’s rest for the first time in a while.

But despite that, I couldn’t relax. The company was still in jeopardy. Papa said he would handle things. Kade also said the same, but I just couldn’t sit back.

A week. A week was all we had.

“Gianna, how many rats did you catch in the meeting yesterday?” I asked as I looked at a file on my laptop, tapping my index finger on the armrest of my chair.

“Four,” she answered from her station, typing away on her laptop.

“Names.”

She gave me the names without looking up from her laptop and I nodded as she spoke. The four rats turned out to be the men that I really hated. That was good, now we didn’t need an excuse to get rid of them.

I sighed. “What do I do, Gianna? I feel useless.”

“In the police or military department, do you think the higher–ups lift a single finger? No, they just give out orders and watch those below them carry them out.”

“So I’m just supposed to sit back and do nothing?”

“Exactly.”

“But Papa is working, and he’s the CEO.”

“He isn’t.”

I stared at her. When my gaze became persistent, she finally raised her head from her laptop and looked at me. That was when I finally asked, “What do you mean he isn’t the CEO?”

She didn’t waste any time in her answer. “Yesterday was the first time in a while that your father set foot in this office. And he left soon after. He signs the important documents because it’s required. If it wasn’t, then he wouldn’t even set eyes on them. He’s only the CEO by name, Belladonna. All the responsibilities and duties have shifted to you since. It’s only a matter of a short time before your father steps down. Medea knows this. She might say Mr. Varkas is her reason for causing this mess, but that is only half the truth. She knows she’s running out of time to take the company from you.”

I scoffed, looking away from her and clicking a button on my laptop to clear the file on the screen.

Higher–ups don’t lift a finger, she says. So I was going to relax and think about what to do when this was all over, staring blankly at my laptop screen.

She groaned. “Yes, Belladonna?

“Did… did Kade ask you to give you updates on me?”

“Yes,” she answered. “Every day, I give him a detailed report on how your day went.”

A smile twisted my lips, my insides warm and the butterflies returning. “I didn’t know you were both close.”

“We’re not.

“Hmm.”

I stood up, picking up my jacket and purse. “I’m going to get coffee.”

She looked at me with her eyebrows furrowed. “You’re going to get it yourself?” I nodded. “Why can’t you send someone?”

“Then I won’t have an excuse to see Kade,” I answered as I left the office and I could almost hear her rolling her eyes behind me.

I would buy the coffee myself and go deliver it to him. He said he would wait for me, and he didn’t say I couldn’t visit him.

When I walked out of the office, the whispers followed me behind like a loyal dog, but I was too high up on cloud nine to notice.

The cafe was just a stone’s throw from the company so I walked there, my hands in my jacket’s pocket, my head low so I wouldn’t look like I was crazy smiling to myself.

And because my head was low, I didn’t notice the person in front of me until I bumped into them and their coffee spilled on them.

My eyes widened and I brought out my handkerchief, trying to clean his shirt:

“I’m so sorry,” I muttered as I cleaned the coffee–or tried to, anyway. “My mind was somewhere else. I could-”

“Belladonna.”
