Chapter 805 Stop Making It Weird
Wait… could this be about Rianne hugging him yesterday? The memory of that awkward scene flashed through Stella’s mind; she coughed twice and said, “Rianne didn’t mean to do that yesterday. Don’t take it personally.”
Eddie replied stiffly, “That was the first time in my life a woman has ever hugged me!”
Stella blinked, stunned. What was that supposed to mean…? Was he planning to make Rianne take responsibility? That didn’t seem like something you could “take responsibility” for.
Her mind spun quickly as she studied him, expression full of conflict. “She wasn’t the first, right?”
“Come on,” she continued, “your mother’s never hugged you? And even if she didn’t, you must’ve been held by a maid when you were little.”
Eddie’s jaw tightened. “Do you know why I’m telling you this?”
Now was not the time for jokes.
Honestly, he hadn’t realized until now that Stella could be this cheeky.
But Eddie wasn’t in the mood to play along.
Stella pouted. “You said Rianne was the first woman to hug you. I’m just trying to clear her name! She’s not the first person who’s ever hugged you, so don’t think you can use that to guilt her into anything.”
Eddie froze. “Use it to what?”
Eddie thought. Guilt her? What, did I look like that kind of person?
“And anyway,” Stella added, “it’s just a hug. What’s there to ‘take responsibility‘ for?”
Eddie went silent. Just a hug, huh?
He
got
it now–Stella was obviously taking Rianne’s side.
That realization stung more than he expected.
“Stella,” he asked, “have I ever treated you badly?”
She stayed quiet.
“Be honest,” he pressed. “Have I?”

“No,” she admitted.
It was true–everyone around Abraham had treated her well.

“Then after all these years,” Eddie said, “do I seem like the kind of man who’d pull something like that?”
“Then what are you trying to do?”
The moment she realized he didn’t actually mean to make Rianne ‘take responsibility,‘ Stella let out a breath of relief.
Thank God.
If he had been serious, Rianne would’ve had no time to deal with that.
Things at Tempest were already enough to drive her insane.
Just thinking about Tempest made Stella uneasy again. Those two had been so good together once- how had things ended up like this?
And Ariana…
Rianne had rarely mentioned her before, so Stella had assumed it was all about Hailey.
After all, Linden had adored Hailey.
She hadn’t expected another woman in the picture–and Ariana was Tempest’s sister.
“I’ll take responsibility for her,” Eddie said suddenly.
“Huh?”
The words hit Stella so hard her brain went blank.
“Wait–what are you talking about? Rianne, she—!”
What did that even mean? Did one hug somehow turn into something more?
Eddie watched her dumbfounded expression and finally said, “Relax, I’m kidding.”
Stella exhaled sharply. God! So it was a joke.
He’d scared the life out of her. “You–why do you make jokes like that?”
Eddie shrugged. “As a fellow medical professional, I’ll just help her out once.”

“The situation in Yalvoria’s complicated,” he explained. “Most of your people are still stationed in Falvaria. Call Evie–she’s there.”
He wasn’t wrong. Stella nodded in agreement; her people were mostly based in Falvaria.
Every time they worked outside that region, things never ran as smoothly, which was exactly why she’d sent extra manpower this time.
Since Rianne had personally come to her for help, Stella couldn’t let anything happen to her.
She’d agreed readily at first, but now she was worrying that her team might not be reliable enough. She was already planning to ask Abel for help handling things in Yalvoria.
But if Evie was already there…
Evie was extremely competent–so much so that even Stella’s own sister had suffered a few losses under her.
