Chapter 13
In the study, it was just me, Nicholas, and Richard.
The massive bruises on my arm looked even more brutal under the desk lamp.
“Go find Maria and get some ice for that.”
I shook my head.
Richard had to call Maria in himself. She showed up with the medical kit to take care of me.
Nicholas looked guilty, maybe even genuinely concerned.
“Shit, Gabby, I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to that.”
The next second, he let out this pained grunt.
Richard had smacked him right across the shoulders with his cane.
“You little bastard. No Ashford man has ever put his hands on a woman, and you’re gonna be the first? You’re a fucking disgrace.”
Nicholas went down on one knee, couldn’t even stand up straight.
But he didn’t say a word in his own defense.
That’s okay though, I did it for him. “Richard, don’t hit him anymore. Nicholas was just stressed out about me. I totally understand. Compared to Miss Cross, I’m
nothing. So he bruised me up a little – big deal. It’s not gonna kill me.”
That just pissed Richard off even more and he whacked Nicholas again.
After Maria left, Richard turned to me. “Gabrielle, Nicholas really fucked this up today. What are you thinking?”
I pulled up the video on my phone and showed it to him.
‘Grandpa, I want a divorce.”
Nicholas struggled to his feet, sounding panicked. “No way in hell. Look, couples fight sometimes. I’ll apologize, I’ll make Evangeline apologize to you. Why do we have to go straight to divorce?”
Richard chucked my phone right at his chest. “You’re already sleeping with her! What’s left to talk about?”
