Trash Husband, I'm the Top novel Chapter 129

“Where’s Aurora? Why isn’t she here yet?”

Mrs. Chambers bit back a few unkind words that nearly slipped out.

Ever since Daniel had cut her credit limit because of Aurora, she only dared to curse her daughter-in-law silently.

Her gaze swept across the room and landed on Eleanor, standing not too far away. She scowled. “This is a family gathering. What’s she doing here?”

She motioned for someone to send Eleanor away.

Daniel stopped her, his tone cool and measured. “I invited her.”

He picked up a glass of wine from a passing waiter and took a sip, the taste clearly improving his mood.

Sensing her son’s good spirits, Mrs. Chambers decided not to press the matter. She leaned in, lowering her voice. “Ms. Cooper is a lovely girl. You should really give her a chance.”

Daniel didn’t bother to agree or disagree, and certainly wasn’t interested in explaining himself.

Just then, Hogan Chambers appeared, leaning on his cane. He’d dressed in a striking crimson suit for the occasion, exuding an air of authority.

He asked sharply if anyone had seen Aurora.

It was obvious to everyone he was in a fine mood tonight.

Daniel handed his glass to a server and strode over to his grandfather.

“She’s not coming,” he murmured quietly, making sure only Hogan could hear.

The old man’s face darkened. “What did you do?”

“Grandpa, let’s talk in private.” Daniel’s polite, composed smile didn’t falter.

For a moment, Hogan Chambers was taken aback. The man standing before him was no longer the brash young upstart who’d once fought tooth and nail for the family legacy; Daniel now carried himself with a steadiness reminiscent of Hogan’s own youth.

He ordered an aide to go look for Aurora and then followed Daniel into a nearby lounge.

As soon as the door closed, Hogan’s cane came down hard on Daniel’s back.

“I’m not divorcing Aurora. You’d better let that idea go.”

Hogan snorted. The wolf pup had grown up—now he even knew how to negotiate. “What about everyone out there? You say no, and my reputation just goes down the drain?”

“Choose someone else.”

Hogan frowned. He’d wanted Aurora as his goddaughter to placate Grandma Grace. It wasn’t as simple as just picking a replacement. Besides, most of the others weren’t up to the task.

“Eleanor,” Daniel said, meeting his grandfather’s eyes. “She may not have Grandma’s favor like Aurora does, but she’s still part of the family.”

Hogan narrowed his eyes. Daniel’s suggestion was delivered offhandedly, but he could sense there was more to it.

“You planned this from the start?”

Daniel’s sharp features were cast in shadow beneath the lights. “It works out, doesn’t it? You get your goddaughter, and Aurora stays my wife.”

Hogan was silent for a moment, then cut straight to the heart of the matter. “As far as I know, Aurora and Eleanor don’t get along. Have you thought about what happens when she finds out?”
